Ripple Effect Romance - Immersed in Love

Immersed tour

Immersed New
Immersed by Jennifer Griffith

Lisette Pannebaker speaks five languages and has a brilliant business plan—personal language immersion. Clients can hire her to shadow them and speak all day in any language they need to learn for business or travel—whatever. But there’s a major hitch: she’s far too pretty. Clients with less than honorable intentions sign up just have Lisette at their side. Solution? A make-under. Way under. It works like a charm. None of her male clients show her the least bit of interest. Until… Erik. Erik Gunnarsson is charming, kind, and smart—everything she’s ever looked for. Even though he seems to have a secret and she swore she'd never date a client, Lisette is tempted to shed her disguise—even if it means jeopardizing her career.

~Excerpt~
Erik Gunnarson was unbelievable. Her mouth went dry when she saw him. Lisette hadn’t seen anything this good in months. Years. Maybe ever. At least not in person. Sure, in movies, when men were all filter-lit and filmed from just the right angle, they might have looked this good, but not in person.
Suddenly the room was far too hot for this stupid fuzzy pumpkin sweater with the shoulder pads. And this wig? She felt like a blooming fool in it.
“Hello. I’m Lisette Pannebaker.” She extended her hand, but immediately saw it tremble. His olive skin. Those dark brown waves in his thick hair. She could feel her voice quavering. Tiny beads of perspiration formed on her upper lip, and she touched the side of her eye, then her neck.
He looked up at her, looked puzzled a moment, and then gave her a crooked smile before standing to shake her hand. When he touched it, the trembling went into high gear, like she’d received an electric shock. Did he feel it too?
“Ah, you are speak the English now. I see.” His voice was like…butter. He cleared his throat and said, “I am please to meet you. My name is Erik Gunnarson.”
The accent came heavy, and the lilt was definitely Scandinavian. She’d lived in Norway, traveled all the Scandinavian countries. Was he Danish? He looked Danish. Lots of Danes she’d met had darker hair. Like Erik’s.
With effort she remembered to speak to him. “Where do you come from, Mr. Gunnarson?”
He squinted and shook his head, a sign she’d seen a thousand times before in these meetings, so she asked it more slowly.
“I come from Reykjavik. No.” He puzzled a moment and then continued. “A village…near…Reykjavik.”
Oh, Iceland. She wanted to ask him all about his life there, his upbringing, his family, his plans for a family of his own, and could she please be the mother of his children?

Get a hold of yourself, Lisette. She nearly slapped herself. This had to be professional. What a crying shame, too. He had such a nice crooked grin. And those upper arms. While most clients wore stinky sport coats over golf shirts or boring business suits and ties, Erik Gunnarson wore a plain grey Henley shirt—and looked like he’d just been at Henley itself, pulling the oars in the Thames. Those triceps. Who did he think he was? Thor?

Jewelz Review~
Immersed is the final novella in the Ripple Effects Romance Series. This has been a delightful series to read. Each book can stand alone and yet they are all connected. Each one is a quick read for a relaxing afternoon when you need a little spark of clean romance to brighten your day.

I really enjoyed the story of Lisette and Erik. Unlike the other books in this series the connection to the others is very loose. I didn't even realize how it connected to the previous book until I went back to read the intro to the book at the end of Second Chances 101. Although the connection to the other books is very loose - it continues the theme of sweet romance between somewhat unlikely couples.

Poor Lisette - she's too beautiful for any man to take her seriously. I can't imagine the frustration she must have felt at being taken advantage of and inappropriately propositioned so often. I love her aunt Corky who knows just how to help Lisette and is able to help Lisette find balance between her beauty and her brains.

Erik is a doll! What a sweet and determined guy. Somehow he's the only man who can see beyond Lisette's good looks and recognizes not only how intelligent she is, but what a kind heart she has also. He's the man of any girl's dreams.

Be sure to pick up Immersed and the entire Ripple Effect Romance Series - you will not be disappointed!

Tifferz Take~
I was Immersed in Immersed in Love. It is a sweet romance that had magnetic characters  Lisette and a perfect combination. But, Lisette just seems to pick all the wrong guys. All the guys in her life seem to just look at her outward beauty and not her as a person. So, her brilliant aunt gives her an idea about a make under. Yes a make under. It seems to be just what she needs. Until she wants to get all dolled up for Erik her client who is not fazed by her make under and seems to understand Lisette flaws and all. I  would say that Immersed in Love is not to be missed. Read it today! I am still smiling when I think of the book.

Chellz Review~
I have truly enjoyed each book in the Ripple Effect Romance Series.  Jennifer Griffith captured me with the engaging story of Lisette in her concluding volume, Immersed.  Lisette's story keeps moving and I was often wondering about Erik's history.  He seems just too good to be true and in the final chapter all my concerns were answered.  I wish I had an Aunt Corky; she is perfect in this story and adds a listening ear and wonderful advice to Lisette.   Everything is tied up with a pretty bow and life is wonderful after all the heartache and conflict are resolved.  Make sure you find time to enjoy this series soon.

FYI~ we received complimentary copies in exchange for our reviewz and participation in this blog tour. Immersed is a clean romance - nothing more explicit than sweet kisses and no inappropriate language.

Review Eternal Mercury

Can true love survive the boundaries of death?

Eighteen-year-old Chelsee Taylor has been in love with her boyfriend, Max, since they started kindergarten together. She has no idea that high school graduation will be the last perfect day of her life. After a deadly car accident, Chelsee refuses to accept Max's death because she can still feel his presence. No one believes her and she is completely alone. Until Blake Andersen shows up. It's not just that he believes her . . . or even just that he's so understanding . . . . But why is Max's presence so strong when she's with Blake?

Eternal Mercury is two books in one. Book 1, Chelsee's Story, is bittersweet and moving, while Book 2, Blake's Story, is gritty and inspirational.

Jewelz Review~
I loved Eternal Mercury! This is a touching story of true, lasting love. It's the kind of love that dreams are made of - in this case quite literally. Chelsee, Max, and Blake's story is sweet, emotional, and a wonderful escape from reality. I appreciated reading Chelsee's POV and then Blake's POV. A lot of gaps were filled in by the time Blake's story came to a close. It was a truly heart-wrenching journey by the end. There is so much emotion woven into this book - it's almost larger than life, yet it deals with real-life challenges that many people face and brings peace to your heart and soul as you read of this amazing relationship.

I've never read anything quite like this - it was truly powerful. I look forward to more from Ms. Pinter.

FYI~ I received a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. This is a clean read - no intimate scenes and the language is clean too.

Jewelz Review~
Her Best Match by Tamie Dearen is adorable - such a fun romantic comedy! Anne Best is a widowed empty nester who with her friend's encouragement flies out to New York City to interview for a job with Gherring, Inc. Anne has no idea that she's interviewing with Steven Gherring, most eligible bachelor and multi-millionaire to be his personal executive assistant. Mr. Gherring is if nothing else amused and refreshed with Ms Best's unorthodoxed interview and sweet southern drawl so he takes a chance and hires her. The ensuing months take them on a whirlwind of adventures as they work together and get to know one another. But can an inexperienced and naive mother from Texas ever hope to win the heart of millionaire playboy Steve Best?

I truly can't say enough about how enjoyable this book was to read. It was refreshing, fun and full of so many fun characters that become a part of Anne's life in the Big Apple. She has such a fresh approach to life and is so kind to everyone she meets. I want her for my best friend! Kudos to Tamie Dearen for such a great novel - I can't wait to dig into the rest of the series to learn about Emily & Charlie.

FYI ~ this is a clean read & I received a complimentary copy of Her Best Match to read and review for the blog.

~Excerpt~
GOT HEART? The music pitches and swells, violin and guitars, drumbeats and thudding bass. As I sway back and forth in front of the stage, it feels like being in the eye of a tornado, where it’s calm, but everything is going crazy whirling around me. I can’t stop looking at Micah, at the way the lights reflect off his mohawk, at the way he’s completely lost in the storm of overlapping chords. I see every part of him, tiny pieces I never knew existed. The slight bend in his nose, the wedge-shaped scar on his right temple, the outline of his bicep hiding beneath the pyramid tattoo. His lips part, just barely, when he exhales. As I imagine the invisible mist of his breath hanging in the air, I inch closer to him. Here, in the strange blue light, while the bass pulses and pounds, all I can think about is touching him. Our fingertips brush. A shockwave courses through me. I want to grab him and pull him into my calm spot, closing my eyes and kissing him while the world spins topsy-turvy around us. My thoughts feel hot inside my head, like they should be radiating a laser beam across the club, but Micah’s eyes are still closed, his body loose. He’s oblivious to the fact I’m thinking about kissing him. He has no idea my eyes are skimming their way down the lines of his body. His cheekbones. His beard stubble. The ridge of muscle connecting his jaw to the center of his chest. The faintest trace of sweat glistens where his neck meets his right shoulder. I want to touch my lips to it. This is crazy. It’s Micah. I don’t like Micah. He doesn’t like me. We have about as much in common as, well, nothing. I sneak another glimpse at him. He’s still completely entranced by the song. He’s still completely kissable. It has to be the beer, or the music, the violins and guitars and electronic pulsing, the whole otherworldly quality to this song. Or maybe it’s just because I’m not myself here, and I don’t have to obey the rules of Lainey.   GOT GAME? I sub back into the game a few minutes later and stay through the end of the half. It’s still 1-0. The Yellow Jackets tie it up on a breakaway goal in the second half. At this point I’m running from one end of the field to the other, playing more defense than any striker forward ought to be playing. I can’t help it. It feels so good to be in the game. Matt Clifton saves a shot on goal and drop-kicks the ball in my direction. I dribble up field, out maneuvering two of the other team’s defenders. I pass the ball to Jason who sends it across to our right wing forward. The defense kicks the ball out of bounds and we get a corner kick. Jason goes to take it. I position myself in front of the goal, dancing back and forth as I vie for position with one of the Yellow Jacket fullbacks. It’s a beautiful kick—high and strong, and it’s coming right at me. The other players, the shouting, the movement, they all fade into the background as I keep my eyes locked on the ball. Angling my body just slightly, I propel all five feet and eight inches of myself into the air at exactly the right moment—I think, I hope—and the crown of my head connects squarely with the ball. The players around me all turn to watch as it arcs through the air…     GET LAINEY! I flip on the radio as soon as Leo fires up the engine. I hit the tuning arrow up until it lands on the station Micah put on for the ride home from the baseball game. Leo looks over at me. “I didn’t know you liked this kind of music,” he says. Me neither, but I do. Kind of, anyway. “I’ve been branching out. Anything gets old if you listen to it twenty-four seven, you know?” “I hear you. I like new stuff too.” I don’t answer. If you asked me whether I was the type of person who liked trying new things or preferred sticking with what was familiar, I would have told you I’m the second girl. The if –it-aint-broke-don’t-fix-it girl. I also would have told you plays were lame. It suddenly occurs to me that I don’t seem to know very much about…me. It’s a weird feeling, like maybe a stranger is inhabiting my body. Or maybe a stranger was, and I kicked her out.

2013 RWA Golden Heart© Finalist
2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award semifinalist
ABNA Publisher Weekly Reviewer Set in the colony of Pennsylvania in 1730, this riveting novel begins as 18-year-old Selah Kilbrid runs into Quaker minister Nathan Crowley, a man who “labor[ed] under the delusion that [Selah] would soon be his wife” despite the fact that she was betrothed to a man on his way to America from Ireland. Nathan tells Selah that if she refuses him, he will have her “charged as a witch” because of her ability to heal the sick. To avoid Nathan’s plan to marry her the following Sunday, she leaves for Philadelphia to wait for the arrival of her betrothed and marry him before returning home. In Philadelphia, she discovers that her betrothed has died at sea. She then purchases Henry, an indentured servant, and convinces him to pose as her husband and help protect her from Nathan. As the story continues, the reader learns of Selah’s family history and the powers she possesses; Selah is half human, half goddess. It's important that her secret stay safe, because if discovered, she could be killed. The characters are well developed and relatable; the reader empathizes with Selah and her plight. The fast-paced plot is exciting and keeps the reader guessing and in suspense. The end leaves room for a sequel, which, after such a tremendous beginning, would be anxiously awaited. A clear winner!   Kari EdgrenAuthor Kari Edgren Kari Edgren did not dream of becoming a writer. Instead, she dreamed of everything else and was often made to stay inside during kindergarten recess to practice her letters. Despite doting parents and a decent school system, Ms. Edgren managed to make it through elementary school having completed only one book cover to cover – The Box Car Children, which she read approximately forty-seven times. Things improved during high school, but not until she read Gabrielle Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude in college, did she truly understand the power of a book. Ms. Edgren aspires to be a Vulcan, a world-acclaimed opera singer, and two inches taller. She resides in the Pacific NW where she spends a great deal of time torturing her husband and children with strange food and random historical facts. Ms. Edgren hasn’t stopped dreaming, but has finally mastered her letters enough to put the stories on paper.

Ripple Effect Romance - Second Chances

second chances tour

Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver Thirty seven year old Francie Davis, a recent widow and empty nester, gets to attend college at last. She’s sure her luck has changed when she also lands a job on campus that will pay her tuition, as administrative assistant to a history professor. When her handsome new boss yells at her on the first day of work, Francie worries she will never be good enough. For Professor Alex Diederik, life is going downhill fast. Not only is his bitter ex-wife trying to poison their only daughter against him, but now his one place of solace—his work environment—is being complicated by his attractive new administrative assistant. She drives home his feelings of failure as a husband and father, and Alex wonders if hiring her was the right thing to do. Francie will have to put aside her hurt and insecurities or risk her dreams, while Alex must look outside himself if he’s to mend the breach with his daughter. And, perhaps, find someone who can help heal his pain.

Tifferz Take~
Francie is starting over. Her husband Greg has died and her son Rafe is going off to Harvard! So she is going back to college and working full time. Big changes are in store for her. Her first day does not go as planned but she manages. She later learns one of her bosses Alex is divorced and his ex wife is a shrew. Never has a kind thing to say just like her husband Greg with her. Francie can relate to how Alex is treated.
Francie meets Rose at lunch when she can’t find another place to sit. She is rude to Francie but Francie just puts her in her place and they chat over lunch and became friends. They plan to make bread and preserves on Friday night! Which turned out to be a huge success and they made plans again!
Alex and Francie meet again when he shows up at her house because it is on the historical list and they end up spending the day together. They seems to have a natural re pore. The flow of the story was great and characters were fun.  I liked this sweet romance but the ending seemed a bit rushed to me.  Other than that it was a delightful romance.

Jewelz Review~
I just love Francie and Alex - not to mention Sam. As with the previous Ripple Effects Romances, Second Chances 101 is a delightful, sweet read that you can tear through in a single sitting. The story is engaging and the characters are delightful. Since it is a novella the characters are not overly developed, but they do have their own unique personalities and you come to feel as if you are reading about the goings on in the life of a dear friend.

I love that Francie and Alex are truly perfect for each other - that they are so similar in their need for organization along with their common scars from a previous relationship. Sam is delightful and brings a fun element to the story and their relationship. While I would have loved for the book to have been longer so that the relationships & character development could have been more thoroughly explored, I do enjoy a book that I can read in one sitting - and this fits that bill perfectly.

I can't wait to read the final installment in this series.

~Excerpt~
“Are you for real?”

“I’m not sure what you mean,” Francie said, trying not to be offended. She was used to being complimented on her cooking. Even Greg hadn't been able to find anything wrong with that.

The girl pointed at the sandwich Francie had pulled from the plastic wrapping. “You’re really bringing food from home?”

“I don’t have money for eating out.” Francie hated the flush she could feel creeping up her neck.

“What, you spend all your money on your clothes?”

Francie glanced down at the suit she had bought for her first day. It was only the second time she had worn it. She decided to address the girl's remark the same way she had when Rafe used to get snarky with her.

“I like you.” Francie picked up half of the sandwich. “You remind me of when I was young and rude. What’s your name?” She took a bite of her lunch.

The girl blinked but then giggled. “All right. I deserved that.” She reached out her hand in a very formal gesture. “You can call me Rose.”

Jewelz Review~
I love Rachel Van Dyken books and the Eagle Elite Series is one of my favorite series - if not my absolute favorite. Entice is the much anticipated third book in the series and it holds a special place in my heart because it tells Chase's "happily ever after story". Well... as much as a HEA you can get when  you're dealing with the mafia.

Entice is everything I hoped for - and then some. All of my favorite characters from the previous books have returned along with some we hadn't met before. There's always a new secret to be uncovered when you're dealing with the mafia. I absolutely love Chase and Mil in this book - they are perfect! Tex is a riot and I can't wait to learn more about him! Nixon and Trace are amazing as usual.

If you've read the first two books - Entice is a must read. If you haven't - what are you waiting for? Go pick up the entire series - you won't be disappointed.

FYI~ this is a New Adult book that contains adult themes, violence, language, and open door intimate scenes. Not recommended for readers under 18. We received complimentary copies in connection with this blog tour.

CJz Review~
Van Dyken never disappoints in my favorite series she has written so far!   Entice immediately had my attention from page one!  The action begins and the plot thickens with gunfire, hits being ordered and the Elite having to figure out who is loyal and who is not.  I am amazed, enthralled and addicted to the Eagle Elite series!  Entice is an extreme roller coaster ride from start to finish!  It was exhilarating, full of twists and turns and when it was over it seemed like it went by way too quickly and then I wanted to read it all over again!  This book is full of everything: gun-toting mob boss action, steamy romance and deep emotional situations that feel like you are watching them unfold before you!  Van Dyken has a gift for writing, she grabs the reader's attention from the beginning and holds it until the very last page!

Rating:  cussing and open door intimate scenes between a married couple

~Excerpt~
By the time I got back to the room, Chase was in the bathroom. The shower was running, and I could have sworn I heard him singing some sort of Frank Sinatra song, but it’s entirely possible I made it up. Trace hadn’t been the only one drinking wine.
With a flourish I fell across the bed and let out a huge sigh — the type of sigh a girl lets out when she’s trying to let the person next to her know that something’s not right.
Lucky me. All I had was a wall.
Right, so I was sighing at a damn wall.
I sighed again.
Well, no time like the present. I wasn’t sure which side of Chase I was going to get tonight. The hot-as-hell arrogant asshole, who made me want to slap him almost as much as I wanted to kiss him? Or the funny, easy-going, hormonal teenager, who had left earlier this evening after staring at my boobs like he was twelve?
I smirked at the thought. Me and my sigh would take either one. The water turned off in the bathroom. The door swung open. I glanced and almost fell off the bed.
Chase naked.
Chase. Was. Naked.
Clearly he wasn’t aware that I was in the room. He didn’t turn, just ran the fluffy white towel around his dripping body. Licking my lips, I felt my pulse jump as he wiped a few droplets that streamed down his face. Damn, I wanted to run my tongue along the trails the water created. My breathing picked up — and I swore under my breath as that same towel ran down his ridiculously tight abs. I was completely wrecked, my body strung so tight I was afraid to keep breathing — afraid that it was too loud — and I didn’t want the show to end.
“How were the girls?” Chase asked without turning around.
Aw, crap. Embarrassed, I cleared my throat and scolded my eyes for continuing to remain on his muscled body. Just one more look, I promised myself, and then I’d be fine.
“Good.” I continued my bold stare. His ass was fine. Seriously. Fine.
“You get some wine and food?” he asked, wrapping the towel around his waist. Bummer.
“Yup,” I squeaked, my voice sounding all kinds of immature.
“So,” he padded over to the bed and sat, “dinner and a show, huh?”
“I, uh—” Laughing, I scooted away from him toward the pillows. “I was going to say something, but—”
“Cut the shit, Mil.” Chase smirked. “You were ogling.”
“Girls don’t ogle.”
“Oh?” That gorgeously perfect idiotic face mocked me with every ounce of hotness. Damn Chase Winter. Damn beautiful man. God should have at least taken pity on the female race and made him short or fat or anything but what I was staring at. A muscled god with dark skin, bright green eyes, and a smile that made a girl immediately want to do anything she could to trap him into marriage.
“What’cha thinking about?” He smirked again.

Life in the Palace Book Review

Life in the palace tour
Life in the PalaceLife in the Palace by Catherine Green “We need to talk,” Tal said. Then I knew it was going to go badly. ‘We need to talk’ is the conversational equivalent of walking into your basement without turning on the light, on a dark and stormy night, when a known psychopath is on the loose. You might as well cut to the chase and slit your own throat. Chloe Diaz assumed three things: that when Tal said that she was one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance, it was code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo;’ that the gorgeous Seth Wilks would never be her soul mate and that she’d never have to choose between them. Chloe was wrong. Now the future of the world is in her hands, but what if price is too great to pay?
This is a brief description of the plot:   After a lifetime in the shadow of her sister, Chloe is severely phobic of the chronically cool. Seth is everything she avoids; a pre-med philosophy major who works in a bar, plays in a band and is so good looking that grown women stare at him in the street. But it’s hard to say no to your soul mate. Thinking she’s maxed out her supply of destiny, Chloe settles down to enjoy the happily-ever-after.   Tal says that she’s one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance. Chloe assumes this is code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo.’ Actually Tal’s main extracurricular activity is fighting the forces of Oblivion. The People never need to hide what they are because no one ever believes them. Until Chloe does.   Chloe sets out to help Tal and The People as much as she can as an outsider. Seth says as long as no one wears their underpants on the outside Chloe can do what she likes. What he doesn’t say is that he’s also one of The People, although non-practicing. But as the Final Battle draws nearer, Chloe realizes it’s time for Seth to go collect his regulation sword. The only thing standing in his way is her. Seth says he’ll give up his place in heaven to stay with her. Chloe must choose between Seth’s soul and her own happiness.

Praise for Life in the Palace An interesting take on the paranormal romance genre. …..While other books in the genre have unrealistic buy in to the acceptance of someone from the outside entering a "new world" Life in the Palace handled it from both the main character looking in and the dwellers of the Palace looking out at this person trying to enter their world. …….I am so happy to hear that there are more books in the series! – Yonit on Goodreads I loved this world that Catherine Green created. I happily lost myself in the life & deep love between Chloe & Seth …..I loved the attention to detail, the fleshing out of the world around them, the obvious growth of all the characters... Even the heartbreaking choices made at the end. Book two I cannot wait to read! – Ebon Darkmyth on Smashwords Loved it, great story line, fun characters and after reading it and thinking deeply about the duality of our lives, it made my prayers come alive! – Rebecca Wittenstein on Amazon.com This book introduces you to a whole host of characters that you want to meet in real life. ….The action keeps you reading, while the budding love between Seth and Chloe makes you breathless. A great read. – Cypora Cohen on Amazon.co.uk
CatherineAuthor Catherine Green Catherine Green writes fantasy books featuring religious characters in a brazen attempt to make the people in faith communities seem less weird. She lives with her husband, children and three marginally neglected goldfish. When she's not writing, or pretending to be one of her characters on Facebook, she has been known to cook dinner.

Jewelz Review~
Life in the Palace is a powerful novel. I'm not sure what I had expected, but it wasn't this. While the story has a deep religious foundation, at the heart it's a story of love - true love. Not just romantic love, but the kind of love where you are willing to sacrifice your own happiness - even your own life - to save the other.

The story of Seth & Chloe is simply the story of boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love. However, their relationship has the power to not only destroy them - but the entire world. At once a story of loyalty and faith - yet a heart-wrenching tale of soul-mates whose love knows no bounds and unbeknownst to them affects the foundation of the entire spiritual world.

I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel: To Call Your Name.

FYI - I received a copy in conjunction with this blog tour. Some mild language, no open door scenes, but there is reference to premarital sex.

Review ~ Scents and Senses

Scents and Scenses Blog Tour
scentsScents and Senses: Supernatural Friends. What the fairy tales didn’t tell you Playing the role of a knight in shining armor is more complicated than it seems in the storybooks, as sixteen-year-old Joy discovers when she repeatedly comes to the rescue of a fifteen-year-old human. But when she meddles in the girl’s social life, Starra sends her packing. Starra is determined to completely dissociate herself from the subterranean creature that has manipulated her life and cast her into the limelight. However, her resolve is soon tested when she becomes involved in a critical situation where supernatural assistance can enable her to carry out a daring plot. Eventually, Starra’s involvement with her new other-wordly friends extracts a heavy price when she is beset by challenges that range from the down- to-earth struggles of a typical teenage student, to the realm of the fantastic. Nothing prepares her, however, for the ultimate challenge.
Author Loren Secretts Loren Secretts was raised in a book-filled home, in a sleepy east coast suburb of the US. These factors are undoubtedly responsible for her early design of a number of exciting imaginary worlds that she could escape to from time to time during her childhood. In her teen years, between schoolwork and lending an ear to her friends, Loren had less opportunity to go AWOL. Instead, her experience as a confidant to others inspired her to major in psychology in college and earn her M.A. in the field on the west coast. As an adult, Loren has found fulfillment in her work with children and families for more than a decade. Her passion for writing was revived when she discovered that she enjoyed delving into the human psyche to write psychological reports. But clients' reports are safe with Loren, who guards secrets fastidiously. Indeed, one of her aspirations is to work as a psychotherapist for the CIA, but since she now lives with her family in Canada, that dream will have to await its turn…

Chapter One

Joy

Ever since I’ve been old enough to kick off on a condor with my own two chicken feet, I’ve been drilled to mind my own business.

Mind your own business, the first of the American Ten Commandments.

It’s not one I subscribe to, even though in our community, not minding my own business means more than social suicide; it’s a crime when we ascend above ground.

For thousands of years we deeems have kept away from the creatures running over our heads with their five-toed feet. So if anyone in my community gets wind of the risky job I’m on these days, I’m practically a goner. But that doesn’t stop me from shadowing a certain teenage fivetoe.

There’s also a totally different occupational hazard involved in this position I’ve created for myself, one I’m suffering from right now: this job occasionally makes school seem relatively stimulating. Yawn. I’ve played too many Angry Condor games to count since Starra got involved in some fantasy book a couple of hours ago and lost contact with the real world. Even if I knew how to become visible to the fivetoe eye and suddenly revealed myself, I bet she wouldn’t notice me, the cute teen perched on her windowsill.

Time simply refuses to advance, and I have to resort to counting the spider eggs cocooned in their nest on a nearby tree branch. A sudden sigh interrupts my lame occupation. There’s a starry look in the big eyes, and I notice the novel is slipping out of Starra’s dreamy grip. This is my window of opportunity! I finger the starchy edge of the book jacket and coax the book forward.

Thud. The book falls to the floor, and the movement seems to bring Starra back to her senses. At last she grabs a hoodie and sets out, probably for one of her night excursions on the Vista Del Mar Path. Are we running or biking tonight?

Running it is. I jog behind her, finding the excursion by the shoreline an improvement to watching her read. At least we are moving.

She runs for half an hour, at a speed faster than the sea turtle pace usual for fivetoes. Then she slows to a stop at a jagged rock, half-submerged in the ocean. I groan quietly and contemplate leaving. From experience, I know she’ll climb to the top of her rock and dream away. I start backing off, but when I’m some fifty feet away, I look back. Starra makes a pretty picture there, her silhouette perched high on the rock. Her long legs are tucked under her, and her head hangs back as she keeps her gaze on the stars above. If only she would let loose the heavy dark mane of hair she always twists up at the back of her neck, she would truly look like a mermaid risen from the sea.

Something pulls me back to her. I can’t explain it, but I have a feeling trouble is lurking nearby, waiting to snatch her in its net.

My chicken feet make an about face and follow Starra home as she takes the shorter route through town.

Chapter Two

Starra

Rushing by the shadows harboring in Little Florence Square’s imposing arches, I remember how, as a kid, I believed the images were ghosts. An impulsive urge to feed my old fear makes me scan the deserted cafĂ© court. Do I see a littering of beer bottles in the corner? Weird. It looks out of place here, like a scene supplanted from the mainland.

A shadow shifts! Before my brain has time to process the image, I yelp. The shadow jumps out of a corner right in front of me!

“Luc?” My fright gives away to surprise. Ever since he left for college a couple of years ago, I’ve hardly seen the son of my mother’s friend around the island.

“Whadya want?” the tottering image fumes. The stench of alcohol overwhelms my senses. It doesn’t take too much brain power to figure out he’s been drinking in the privacy of the square’s nooks, away from critical eyes.

“Luc, are you okay? Should I call for help?”

The square’s lamplights strike Luc’s face with an ethereal glow. His bloodshot eyes seem to look right through me. There’s no sign of recognition, which makes me realize just how badly he’s stoned.

“Ya gonna t-t-tell Aunt Clara, huh?” Even in his current pathetic state, Clara Brick is on his mind? Well, she does have a history of watching him like a hawk. His mother, Madame Brick, had often discussed the phenomenon with Maman, insisting that her sister-in-law was attempting to build a case against Luc in the hope his grandfather would disinherit him, leaving Clara as sole heiress.

Luc’s body sways clumsily as he moves in on me. Instinctively, I move several steps back, but for each step I take, he takes one toward me, and I retreat further, till my back is pressed against the stone wall. His mouth opens wide as he bellows, “I’m gonna make sh-sure you don’ tell nobody nuthin!”

Jewelz Review~
Scents & Senses is a YA fantasy that follows Starra - a 15-year-old teenager living on an island off the coast of California. Joy - a fairy-type creature has taken it upon herself to introduce her half-human sister Radiance to Starra so they can become friends. Only Joy breaks several of her people's rules in the process. When Starra learns that Joy is the one responsible for all the crazy things happening lately, she tells Joy to stay out of her life. Unfortunately this happens right before the island is taken under siege by the powerful Mr Steel.

I think a variety of readers will enjoy this complex story that intertwines a bit of mystery with fantasy along with the drama & fun of YA lit. It's a clean read too!

FYI ~ we receive complimentary copies of the book for participation in this blog tour.
