The Wager by Rachel Van Dyken

Lose a bet, lose your heart...

What is it about a junior-high crush that can send an otherwise intelligent woman into a tailspin? TV reporter Char Lynn wishes she knew. Jake Titus is too rich, too handsome, too arrogant: a trifecta that once lured Char into the best night-and worst morning-after-of her life. Now they've been thrown together in a wedding party. It's awkward, but survivable . . . until Jake stops acting like a jerk, and starts acting like the man she'd always hoped he could be.

If watching your brother marry your best friend is weird, being attracted to your best friend's other best friend is downright bizarre. Unfortunately for Jake, Char hasn't forgotten how he once tossed her aside. Worse still, Jake's already-nutty grandma is even crazier about Char. Cue meet-cute shenanigans and all manner of meddling, and somehow, Jake's falling. For Char. Now all he has to do is make her believe it . .

Jewelz Review~

I'll admit, I've been a fan of Rachel Van Dyken's books for some time now. I was fortunate enough to read The Bet before it was released back when it was self-published - I loved the story of two brothers who made a bet as little boys that they each belived they would marry their best friend and neighbor Kacey. Well, older brother Travis won The Bet and in this amazing sequel The Wager we learn of a crazy wager between Grandma Nadine and Travis/Kacey.

Let's not mince words here, younger brother Jake was a man-whore in The Bet. He was NOT anyone's favorite character. The Wager is a roll-on-the-floor laugh-out-loud story in which we see Jake get his "com upance" and Grandma Nadine is up to her antics - only this time she's gone all-out! If you aren't literally laughing out loud at while reading this book, you may want to check for a pulse - it's that funny.

In The Wager we learn that even Jake can be redeemed and will find his perfect match - with a little help from Grandma. Char is Kacey's best friend and she has a long history with Jake. She's pretty much been in love with him since junior high, but she's also pretty much hated him since the 8th grade. The way Grandma manages to manipulate her grandsons into doing exactly what she wants is nothing less than amazing.

Ms Van Dyken manages to juxtapose poignant emotional moments with the slap-stick comedy in a way that is seemless and natural. The surprises that Grandma has up her sleeve seem endless - and just when you think you have it all figured out, Grandma proves that she truly knows all and that everyone is just a pawn in her little game called life (even Aunt Petunia.)

Tfferz Take~
The Wager is a memorable, romantic story that had me laughing, smiling, feeling sad and sighing with thoughtful, heartfelt words. If you have not read The Bet. I highly recommend you read it first as this is a book two in the series. Char is a remarkable girl with some past resentment and hurt. She is sweet, sassy and is lots of fun! She is also Kacey's best friend and has a history with Jake that had me getting a bit upset with Jake. I liked her instantly as she was so real to me. I found myself thinking of her as my friend.  Char can roll with things and seems to get along with most everyone.
Jake is a millionaire play boy who I thinks does the most growing in this story. In book one The Bet, he is a JERK. Plain and simple. That is how he starts out in this book. So, can he redeem himself? Or is he so far gone, that we have no hope? Well, we get to seem him learn and becomes the man he was always meant to be. This does not happen fast. It takes time. I felt that it was real. Sometimes it takes time and lots of mistakes to learn and grow. Grandma Nadine is priceless and unforgettable in The Wager. She is always up to something and it always had me laughing, smiling or melting my heart at the thoughtfulness. I loved meeting Petunia, Nadine's very prim and proper sister. She was a delightful in the mix and not without her own faults. She is quick to judge. That had me liking her even more, as she is not so perfect! I loved seeing Travis and Kacey's love story continue! This story brings it all. I would not hesitate to recommend it. I can't wait to read The Gamble, the next book in the series.

Just FYI~ This does contain swearing and sexual situations.
