Blog Tour - Rocky Road by Josi S. Kilpack

Rocky Road
Rocky Road

It was supposed to be a girls’ weekend in scenic St. George, Utah that would include shopping, trying out the local cuisine, and participating in a breast cancer fundraiser. The fact that one of the organizers of the fundraising event, a local doctor, disappeared two months ago was not supposed to be Sadie’s problem. In fact, she refuses to participate in the grassroots investigation her friend Caro, and Caro’s cousin, Tess, have put together prior to her arrival. But then she meets the ex-wife of the missing doctor. How could she not ask a few questions . . . that lead to a few more questions . . . that lead to a small town and yet even more questions. Before she knows it, Sadie is in the middle of yet another murder investigation and trying to piece together a convoluted trail of good intentions, hidden motivations, and philanthropy turned big business.

Jewelz Review~
I'll admit, this is the first of the Culinary Mysteries that I have read. I have friends who have been singing the praises of Josi Kilpack & her delectable books for some time now, but I just didn't have a chance to read them. I am so very glad I finally got the opportunity to read one of these books! Rocky Road was a delightful mystery with scrumptious recipes sprinkled throughout.

While I find myself reading a lot of romantic books these days, my first real love of reading began with mysteries - the Trixie Beldon and Nancy Drew series in particular. So, it was nice to pick up a book again that had a mystery to be solved. While Rocky Road is part of a series, it stands on its own well. I knew that there was history that I didn't know about Sophie, but it didn't feel like I was missing vital information. I do want to go back and read the other books though, so I can fill in those holes!

I thought that Ms Kilpack did a great job creating a realistic situation that required investigative work. Granted, I don't know that the police would truly give someone like Sophie permission to go digging, but it made for a good story. Fiction is an escape for me - and if the author writes in a way that I am able to enjoy the stroy without pausing & thinking "wait a second, that doesn't make sense" then I'm happy. That's the case with Rocky Road. I was able to immerse myself in the mystery of what had truly happened to Dr. Hendricks and then watch in awe as all the little pieces fell into place, along with a few moments that caught me by surprise.

If you like mysteries - this is a fun, enjoyable read & I highly recommend it :)

Chelz Review~
This was my first time reading a Josi Kilpack book.  My mother-in-law LOVES them!!!  However, I was hesitant in reading this book because I am not a fan of mysteries.  I was pleasantly surprised with a nice easy read and an enjoyable story.  The recipes spread throughout the story are a great touch.  (I will have to try the Cafe Rio recipes for sure)  I thought the characters were well though out and believable.  I really liked the part of the story with Sadie having to deal with her friendship with Caro, and the friendship of Caro, with Caro's cousin Tess.   This was very realistic drama that is more common and is rarely infused into a story.  There is not always a "happily ever after" in friendships.

Honest disclosure: we received review copies as part of the blog tour in exchange for participation and for our honest reviews.
