What a fun read this was! Ashley is quite the spunky young woman. Following her father's passing, she sets off to inform her estranged mother of his death. She returns to the home she hasn't seen for 15 years - a home that holds some very unpleasant memories. After finding the home empty, with a suspicious-looking red stain on the kitchen floor, along with a hidden note that reads "witness protection - run!", Ashley heads out and finds help in the form of Thor Garrison.

When Ashley walks into Thor Security and her story pours out, he can't bring himself to tell her he works with security systems, not personal security. He has to help the gorgeous, distressed woman before him. It doesn't matter that she doesn't have the money to pay for his security services. He couldn't have planned it better himself when Ashley offers to help get his mom off his back by informing her that they are engaged.

Certainly, the premise is a bit far-fetched but enjoyable nonetheless -- it makes for quite the adventure. Britney Beth Beale, the woman that has been planning to marry Thor since high school, is a perfect antagonist for their relationship. She's beautiful, but annoying; malicious, but pitiful; and shares a secret past with Thor. This is in addition to the drama facing Ashley as she tries to find out what happened to her mother and whether her disappearance is linked to the recent events that have Ashley fearing for her own safety.

I love all the various characters in this story. While Ashley and Thor are perfectly gorgeous and perfect for each other, the supporting cast brings so much variety. Lulamae has got to be one of my favorite people, but Mina, Rudy, Karla, Minion, and even Rocky all add to the fun dynamics of the overall story.

There was wonderful development on all of their struggles & the overall pacing was great -- I wanted to keep reading late into the night. The only thing I'd change is that everything resolved at about the same time. I would have preferred that the solutions to the various issues facing Ashley and Thor had been spread out a bit, rather than everything winding up within a matter of pages towards the end of the book. I'm hoping we get a book about Uly next :)

FYI: this is a sweet romance, sex is between a married couple and closed door.

I really enjoyed The Clockwise Man. Here we have the 9^th Doctor and Rose in 1920’s London planning to see the British Empire Exhibition. However, it is a Doctor Who novel and nothing ever really goes to plan when the Doctor is around. They wind up getting caught in the middle of a hunt for a mysterious murderer, and all sorts of strange things happen. There are many twists and turns and nothing is what it appears to be.

The story picks up right away. The little prologue before chapter one reminds me a bit of the first five minutes of a Supernatural episode, successfully making you want to continue reading and figure out what in Rassilon’s name is going on with the strange cats.

Justin Richards has shown the strong bond between Rose and the Doctor extremely well. The playful banter between the two is perfect and I can easily hear their voices in my head while reading it because he has stayed so true to each of the characters’ personalities. In the show, the amount that they care for each other is blatantly apparent, and you spend a lot of time wondering when the Doctor will get over himself and just kiss her already. I mean, look at this!

It’s a bit ridiculous how obvious it is that they love each other. And Justin Richards has captured this element beautifully. You can practically see the little grins and stolen glances they give each other and the amazing dynamic that they have going in the book perfectly coincides with the performances of Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper.

Now, the plot of the book itself is very intriguing and clever, and it is executed in a way that younger audiences will have fun reading it, but older ones would find it enjoyable as well. It has a darker tone than some of the series, but it is still light-hearted and humorous and I would have no issues allowing my nine-year-old sister read it. It is rather fast-paced—it’s Doctor Who what would you expect—but there are slower bits where the suspense and mystery really build. Also, morals and justice play a significant part in this particular adventure, dealing with death, war, and the collateral damage that comes with bringing down a tyrant.

All in all, it’s a fantastic read and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Doctor Who or is looking for light sci-fi that isn’t too hard core and difficult to understand.

Save the Date by Susan Hatler is a read not to be missed. It is fresh and sassy. We get Kristen's story!!! She is the one her friends come running to when they have a problem as she is a counselor, and a fabulous one! But when she is betrayed. Kirsten  experiences a huge setback in dating and career. I enjoyed seeing how someone deals with betrayal.
 Ethan is a lawyer and he has a secret. I will be honest. I was dying to know what is was. I was totally surprised. I wonder if you will be too. Ethan is a very patient man. I wish I could barrow some of his as I'm not very patient!

I love all of Kristen's friends! I liked seeing the side story with Rach and Noah.  I can't wait to read Melanie's story!
I highly recommend Save the Date!

Review of Ruin by Rachel Van Dyken

Okay my friends Rachel Van Dyken has scored another touch down ... I feel that Rachel put her heart and soul into this story.

This is not your typical girl meets boy fall in love story (though this does happen). Kiersten is our fiery red headed freshman in college. Who has had a tragic past to overcome and is working on healing. I really felt that throughout the story Kiersten grew as a person and learned some important life lessons.

Then we run into Wes, man what a hottie! Wes is a college football player who is hiding something. Will he share his secret? Will it be to late? Will he give up hope? Or will he fight to the end?

Kiersten's roommate Lisa is a true friend and lightens things up. Some of the things that Lisa says had me cracking up. But don't let that fool you Lisa is a friend will be around forever. Lisa's cousin Gabe is a force to be reckoned with and he truly has Kiersten's back. I was quiet surprised at how protective, caring and thoughtful Gabe is with Kiersten. I expected it for Lisa because she is his cousin. Both Lisa and Gabe form a lasting friendship with Kiersten. But, will that extend toward Wes?

I love that all the characters in this book are flawed, that they have problems. Some bigger than others, but real life problems. They end up helping each other and becoming like family.

Okay, so this story come filled with friendship, romance, unexpected adventures, possibly even shedding a few tears and guessing what will happen next. This story really touched my heart. I highly recommend this book!

I know this is suppose to be a stand alone book but Ms. Van Dyken please I beg of you to write Gabe's story. It needs to be told. 

Just FYI ~ This does contain some swearing, underage drinking and reference to sex but does not contain any sex.

Ladies, pull out your box of tissues! Nicholas Sparks has nothing on Rachel Van Dyken when writing a powerful, emotionally heart-wrenching story. I truly believe that Rachel poured her heart and soul into this book - it's indelibly etched on each and every digital page.

Meet Kiersten: gorgeous red-head, freshman at Univ. of Washington ( go Huskies!) Still attempting to re-build her life after the loss of her parents in a tragic accident 3 years prior, she's self-conscious, fearful, and innocent.

Enter Wes: star quarterback for Univ. of Washington's football team, senior,  drop-dead gorgeous son of a billionaire, and RA? He has secrets of his own.

 Lisa and her cousin Gabe are the perfect supporting characters. Lisa is the type of roommate that offers to plop down on the floor & sleep in your room when you wake up screaming from a night terror. Gabe is the kind of friend that always has your back and is right there, ready to take that step into the unknown by your side. He has a depth of character that I did not anticipate.

So, Ruin is a story of boy meets girl, or perhaps it's girl meets boy. It's a story of friendship. It's a story of what happens when you put someone else above yourself -- whether that be someone you are in love with, or someone you are friends with. It's a story about pain & sorrow, and also of faith and hope.

I have read all of Ms Van Dyken's New Adult books and I have been duly impressed by her ability to craft a powerful story. Her characters are never perfect - they have real pain and real challenges that they face. They are dynamic - they learn and grow through their trials. 

Ruin is no different in that regard - it's a story of pain, friendship, and love. However, it is different from her other books because when I finished reading I didn't simply sigh and think to myself "that was a great book" When I finished reading the last words of Ruin, I felt strengthened and uplifted - I felt that like Kiersten & Wes, I learned something about "How to Live".

Ruin wasn't what I expected, it was better! It is a story that I didn't foresee, a topic I didn't think could be tackled, and a journey I didn't want to end. Ruin is raw; pure raw emotion. You will cry, your breathing will hitch, you will tell yourself 'this can't be happening' over and over again -- and you will continue to read because this story is powerful and has the ability to change you -- change your outlook on life, on love, on time. I feel blessed to have read this book (yes I just said 'blessed' in a book review). Ultimately Wes and Kiersten's story will become a movie in your mind as you experience it first-hand. Gabe and Lisa will become your friends too because this story feels real. Wes, Kiersten, Gabe and Lisa show what true friendship and love it all about. Because you never know what hand life will deal you, only you can decide what to do with the hand you are dealt. Ruin is heart-wrenching, packs an emotional punch (or two) and takes you on a journey you never thought you would take. Words honestly cannot describe how incredible this novel is. Jewelz' Review:

Following her grandmother's passing, Trace has been accepted to attend Eagle Elite, an exclusive college in Chicago. She was raised by her grandparents on a ranch and has never known the big city or this elite-type of environment. The welcome committee doesn't do much to make her feel welcome. Nixon and the "elite" basically run the school and control everything she has access to - including where she has lunch. Trace pretty much hates Nixon, but can't help being attracted to him. And she kind of has to play along if she wants to survive at the school.

Thus the scene is set for a rollercoaster of a ride as Trace tries to not only survive her first year at a new school, but to solve the mystery of who Nixon really is and how he's able to wield so much power at a school he attends.

Trace is a very 3-dimensional character who is more of a mystery than I realized at first. She was somewhat shy and uncertain when she first arrived at Eagle Elite, and understandably so. However, she was strong-willed enough to cope with stressful situations with humor, only allowing herself to break down in private. She's very self-effacing. Is she perfect? No, of course she isn't – but that's not reality and character flaws allow the reader to identity with her.

Nixon is a jerk – plain and simple. The thing is, he's one of those guys your parents warn you about. What is it about these "bullies" that attracts women? Fortunately, there's a lot more to Nixon than we think. He's a "typical" guy who goes about things in all the wrong ways and that's why he comes off as such a bully. However, when the reader learns Nixon's secrets you can't help but fall in love with him too. Sure I still wanted to punch him in the face for some of the things he did, but at least he had good intentions – and right or wrong, that's why he gets away with so much crap (oh that and his little secret).

This is definitely one of my favorite RVD books. What can I say, Elite has a little bit of everything in it: romance, mystery & drama; guns, knives & brass knuckles; hot guys & beautiful girls... oh and cows! I sat down and read it straight through - I just couldn't put it down. The first thing I did when I finished was to call my sister and tell her "You have to read this book! You will LOVE it!" and of course she read it, and she loved it too.

I am a huge fan of the Greatest Hits series by Leslie Langtry. Heck, I was reading the books before the series was called "Greatest Hits". Tifferz and I would talk for hours on end about these amazing books and how they are the perfect combination of murder, mayhem, comedy, and romance. Needless to say I was excited for this latest release and the opportunity to review it.

'Snuff the Magic Dragon' is different from the previous books in the series as it isn't a novel following the escapades of a single member of the Bombay family. Instead, this book is a series of short stories chronicling specific "assignments" of various members of the Bombay family over several thousand years. Because of the format, I missed the character development and added depth that you get from a novel. This book gave me a glimpse into the lives of several Bombays, but I didn't really get to know any of them as I would have preferred. That's my preference though. Given the format, it was fun to learn about the long history of the Bombay family, how they got started in the assassination business, how the island of Santa Muerta came to be, along with the family's role in famous deaths throughout history :)

I would also say that while the stories were enjoyable, I didn't appreciate the crass language, I don't recall the language being like this in previous books. Along with that, even though the stories took place hundreds, if not thousands of years in the past, they all read as modern stories - which may be what Ms. Langtry was going for as the subtitle indicates these are 'Bombay Family Bedtime Stories'. But I wouldn't use that kind of language when telling my child a bedtime story - and I don't think the Bombays necessarily would either. Perhaps I'm wrong - maybe the Bombays teach their children "adult" language when they train them to be assassins :/

Setting my personal biases aside, I am grateful that Ms. Langtry has continued the 'Greatest Hits' series and that she is even trying different formats and styles. She does have a holiday short story coming out entitled 'Four Mocking Birds' - it sounds promising! I hope that we will continue to get more stories about the Bombays, but I do hope that there will be more novels as in the past so that I can get to know and love more of the Bombay Family:)
