Duty by Rachel Rossano

Duty: a novel of Rhynan

Blurb~
Duty to King

Tomas Dyrease, the newly made Earl of Irvaine and the village of Wisenvale, owes his good fortune to his king and the recent civil war. When his benefactor demands Tomas marry the cousin of a noble, he obeys. However, no one warned him that she wasn’t a typical noblewoman.

Duty to Others

Brielle Solarius struggles to keep her village from starvation under the new Lord Wisten, her cousin. The men rode off to war and never returned. The remaining women and children face a dire winter if they do not find a solution soon. When she learns her cousin sold her into marriage to save his life, she isn’t surprised. However, she is taken aback by Lord Irvaine’s unpolished ways. Was this man a noble or a foot soldier?

Duty to Each Other

Bound by the words of their vows, they face a rough future. They must forge a marriage while battling betrayal, accusations of treason, and villains from the past. Survival depends on their precarious trust in each other. Failure could mean death.

Tifferz Take~
Duty is a  story that consumed me from the get go. I liked a story when two people have to marry and don't necessarily like each other.  Brielle and Tomas have great chemistry and both seem to be levelheaded. I found that Brielle is a strong leading lady and has her wits about her. Tomas is a soldier who has many  battle wounds yet is tender and caring with Brielle.  I felt like Tomas and Brielle were equally matched and had to learn to trust one another. I felt Ms. Rossano did a impressive job with Tomas's character flaws and all. I liked him a lot. I really like when the character seem real and they felt that way to me in Duty. I kinda felt the story was a little rushed. I would have enjoyed a little more foundation for Tomas and Brielle's relationship before they were separated. This story has a lot of movement in a short amount of time. It would have been nice to be in one location longer than a night. That being said I still found Duty to be a beautifully written story, filled with romance, mystery and some unexpected events! I will be looking forward to Ms. Rossano's next stroy! I hope you all enjoy this read as much as I did!

Just FYI~ This story does contain some violence, but no sex or swearing.

Hunter by Cheree Alsop

Blurb~
Hunter, the sixth book of the Silver Series, is about Dray, a werewolf who feels trapped and alone in his small farming town. He struggles to find his place and fit in despite his differences, then Dray’s world is shaken when a cute girl shows up the same time as a vengeful wild werewolf pack. With Jaze’s help, Dray fights to protect his town, but when Jaze is in trouble, Dray puts everything on the line to help the werewolves who changed his life.

Hunter is about finding the courage to step into the unknown. It is a story of risking life for love, and discovering the truth about one’s self in the heart of adversity.

Tifferz Take~
I have really enjoyed this series. I am always amazed at how Ms. Alsop can craft a story that has me hooked within the first few pages. I was so thrilled to read Hunter. As we get to see  how things go for Gem from Azure. I am truly empowered when I read about Gem and her outlook on life is so different than I would have pictured. Now Dray is isolated until he meets the new girl in school, Gem! Dray is always looking out for others and that is something you don't come across very often. Dray is so likeable and just a good old farm boy! One of my favorite scenes is the bailing hay with the tractor. It was sweet and fun! I will tell you all that  I was impressed with the ending and how Dray put himself out to protect those he loves. Which changes his life forever! Ms. Alsop does an amazing job with character development and keeping up with past characters!  I was surprised many times when I thought things were going to turn out one way and then I got thrown for a loop and things went a totally different direction. I simply could not get enough of this book!  I do look forward to seeing Mouse get his story. I know I will not be disappointed. This story is not to be missed it is jam packed with first love, adventure, some thrilling fight scenes and much much more.
I truly hope you enjoy this read as much as I did!

Just FYI~ this does contain some violence.

Lucy Duckworth is comfortable with her life and in her own skin, and her habit of picking up orphaned cats is noble. Yet when her roommate asks her to fill in at a kissing booth during the Winter Carnival, Lucy’s even-keeled existence suddenly tilts.

Matthew Kincaide has one simple motto: live off the land, keep your head down, don’t talk a whole lot and never trust a woman. Divorced and not about to give a female control over him again, all he wants is to deliver his animals for the petting zoo and go home. Too bad his annoying brother coaxes him into buying tickets for the kissing booth.

Lucy’s and Matthew’s first kiss ends with a violent sneeze, but she can’t forget that first lip-tingling, take-me-away moment. Though Matthew’s shocked by his first reaction, he lines up for a second chance. Surely lightning can’t strike twice. Will winter fun and a random accident derail their quest to find out how many kisses it takes to fall in love?

Happy Birthday day 12

Cover for 'The Devil Duke Takes a Bride'

Benedict Devlyn, Duke of Banbury, has one thing on his mind and it isn't marriage. But things take a turn for the worse when his menacing aunt throws a hitch in his plans to remain the most sinful and talked-about man in the ton. After all, a man cannot keep the reputation of being The Devil Duke when he is leg-shackled to some simpering spinster.

But his aunt, bless her heart, thinks she's dying, and believes her nephew’s behavior is the only thing standing in the way between her entrance to heaven or hell. So she very lovingly and selflessly sets him up. With his childhood nemesis.

A young woman who, though she claims it was an accident, has nearly killed him thrice through her lack of grace and manners. It matters not that the minute he sets eyes on her at the Christmas ball, his blood boils with lust. He refuses to allow himself to fall prey to his aunt’s ministrations.

That is, until he is compromised and stuck in an engagement to a girl who claims she'd rather jump from a moving carriage than marry him. Funny thing that, for the very minute she says no, he finds his heart very much wants to say yes. When she doesn't leap at the chance to marry him, he sets about to not only prove that he's worthy of her favor, but also worthy of her heart.

Cover for 'The Warden's Lantern'

Dark, creaking trees. Cracking thunder. A ghostly orb.

Barbara Milanowski couldn't have picked a worse night for her amateur paranormal investigation, but she couldn’t let her longtime crush Elmer Derecho’s skeptism go unchallenged. When Elmer runs her off the road with his motorcycle and scolds her for being out in the inclement weather, her happily ever after drops with the barometric pressure and the loss of her keys and glasses. While spending time alone with Elmer was one of her fantasies, the dream date didn’t entail diving into the mud and untangling herself from a raspberry bush.

While trying to protect Barbara from the storm, his eyes are opened to all the things in his life that are missing. Elmer had gotten comfortable with his maps and pictures and chasing tornadoes after the fact. But Barbara reminds him of his forgotten zest for adventures, and ignites his interest in the Warden’s Lantern and for Barbara

While sheltering in a dilapidated guardhouse, Barbara and Elmer are drawn out of the protection by the Warden's Lantern, the ghostly light Barbara had been trying to document. Elmer dismisses it as a trick of the electrical storm, but together they attempt to find the true source of the light. Will their shared talents solve the mystery and start a lasting relationship?

But when court-ordered community service brings them together once more, she be-gins to appreciate Ryan’s charm, good looks, and capable manner.

With all the rumors and assumptions which followed Ryan from a large metropolitan area, how can small-town Kris even begin to trust him? And why won’t he explain any of those situations? Through her efforts to learn Ryan’s mysterious past, they share further experiences: many comedic, one quite dangerous, and others very tender. Why I Write for Astraea Press: Stephanie Michels
Posted: 09 Feb 2013 12:00 AM PST

I first became acquainted with Astraea Press two years ago when my critique partner (and later co-author), Patricia Kiyono, told me AP was doing a fund raiser to support Tsunami Relief for Japan. At the time, Patty was thinking about writing a story for them since she has relatives in Japan, and the topic was very dear to her. I immediately went to the AP website http://www.astraeapress.comto check them out and discovered Astraea was a very new publishing house. Since I'm a business person, I knew the first few years for any company is pretty much of a struggle. So, I was very impressed that AP would donate their profits to such a worthy cause.

What really sold me on Astraea Press, however, is its fundamental principles. At a time when most of the biggest ePublishers were publishing erotic titles, Astraea's owner, Stephanie Taylor, set a much different standard for her company.  AP prides itself on good, clean, and wholesome stories. There is plenty of romance and sexual tension, but no actual sex shown.  Hallelujah! I have a good imagination -- I don't need every Tab A and Slot B spelled out for me.

Since I'm also a grandmother, I don't like picking up some supposedly YA title one of the teenagers is reading to find sex scenes that are far too explicit and adult in it. Since I found Astraea Press, I've been able to share their titles with the kids.  Clean romances and YA books where men and women treat each other respectfully, and the only stalkers and abusers are the bad guys.  Books where actions have consequences, too!  There's something for almost everyone: great romances, contemporary, historical, paranormal, Regency, suspense, YA, etc., And the stories have believable heroes and heroines of all ages and walks in life. Heartwarming proof that romance can happen to anyone. Books you hate to have end.

So, when it came time to look for a publisher for our Stitching Post series, Patty and I both had Astraea Press on the top of our list. We like the people -- anyone who has ever met Stephanie, Kim, Elaina, and others will say the same -- and AP has a reputation for the kind of books we admire and want to be known for. There's nothing on their site or in their back lists that would make me feel uncomfortable about sharing it with my friends from church or my women's groups.

I'm grateful to Astraea Press for taking a chance on an unknown author like me.  Management is fun and the other authors are friendly and supportive. Behind their notes of welcome, I can almost hear them saying: C'mon in a sit for awhile!  I hope it will be a good long visit.

Sincerely,
Stephanie Michels

Tifferz Take~

I enjoyed this collection of stories.  I was drawn in quickly and some of them leave you hanging pretty bad. I had moments when I wanted to rush out and buy the whole story. My favorites were those by Ms. Garr as I had already read the stories and these extras were extra special. I was captivated and found each story exciting. It was great to get an idea of how each author writes. I think I found some new authors and books to check out.

Azure by Cheree Alsop

Azure (The Silver Series Book 5)
Blurb~
Azure, the fifth book of the Silver Series, is about an alpha werewolf who rescues a human from the vengeful grasp of his pack. Nora is the only person who is not afraid of Vance’s size or strength, and in return she gains his respect. When Vance is pushed to the edge of survival, his heart is torn between loving Nora and a werewolf who befriends him with the kindness that is greatly lacking in his life.

Azure is a story of strength beyond the endurance of the body. In a world turned upside down by violence, the choice between what the heart wants and the safest solution can be the most important decision of all.

Tifferz Take~
I really enjoyed this book because it was so different. Vance has a complex relationship with the wolves he lives with and everything shifts once he meets and stands up for Nora. I instantly enjoyed watching the interaction between Vance and Nora. They don't always agree/ get along and sparks fly. I found them so real. I could see myself doing and saying some of the same things Nora did. I also liked Gem right away. She is sweet and full of hope. I think Vance needed that. I was surprised at some of the turns of events I honestly was not expecting. I really like the smore scene! Azure is a thrilling read that got my heart pumping and had me rooting for Vance and the others. It is hard when people you care about betray you so watch your back! I loved reading this adventure and meeting new werewolves.  I will say the last fighting scene was a bit over the top for me. But other than that this is an amazing read. I will tell you I was surprised at what was revealed in the end. I just did not see that happening!  I saw some very cool surprises along the way! I hope you all enjoy this read as much as I did!

Just FYI~ This does contain some violence.

Birthday Bash!!!
Posted: 01 Feb 2013 10:00 AM PST

Well, here we are!  Two years into our wonderful journey at Astraea Press, and I have to say, I’m the most blessed business owner in the history of business owning.  I have a wonderful staff, and wonderful authors. What more could I ask for?

2012 was an AMAZING year for our company!  We sold our first foreign rights, acquired a NY Times bestselling author, two USA Today bestselling authors, numerous number one bestsellers, award winning titles, and also secured a NY agent to handle foreign rights and audio.  Astraea Press is moving on up!  I can’t tell you how excited I am about all the new developments.  In all honesty, I expected Astraea to be where we are now around the year 2015 or 2016.  Never in my wildest dreams did I expect such a huge demand for sweeter books, especially in a predominately erotic market.

Last year, we had a phenomenal turn out with our first anniversary having a free book a day.  So for our two-year anniversary, we’re giving away TWO free books a day for the entire month of February! It’s our way of saying THANK YOU for keeping Astraea in business, for supporting us and making us the success we are today and the years to come.  Without my readers, I wouldn’t have a business. My authors wouldn’t have a reason to find a publisher.  So you, my dear readers are the essence and the life force behind what we do. Astraea Press strives to make you happy so you’ll keep coming back for more!  And the biggest compliment you can give us is to tell a friend to check us out!

Visit our blog every day for information on how to download a free copy of two titles a day!

Divergent by Veronica Roth Guest Review by Jewelz!!

Divergent (Divergent, #1)Divergent by Veronica Roth

Blurb:
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Jewelz Review:
Wow! Divergent is one of those books that you just don't want to put down, even though it's 500 pages long! I managed to tear through it in two days. It's also one of those rare books that "sucks you in" to the point that I started obsessing about it a bit - I, of course, immediately read the sequel "Insurgent" and then followed up with visiting the Author's website and blog, and then found the book's Facebook page. I even visited the Author's Tumbler (which my teenaged daughter insists is only for teens and not for moms). I couldn't seem to get enough! It's reminiscent of my experience with a few other series ;) I am eagerly anticipating the third and final book that is scheduled to be released this fall.
Enough about my "fangirl" response to the book - on to the nitty gritty :)
Veronica Roth did a great job of creating a well-defined dystopian society that was easy to imagine, visualize, and understand as you read the book. The society that she creates is very thought-provoking. Can you imagine living your life bound to one specific virtue - such as honesty - and  living that 100% of the time, no gray areas allowed, no "sugar-coating" the truth or even consideration for people's feelings; it really would be an intriguing experiment.
I found that the characters are well developed and three-dimensional. I really enjoyed the depth of her character development. She didn't limit it to just the main characters either - many of the supporting people have defined histories and develop throughout the book along with the main characters: Tris and Four. She does this without  it feeling like she's muddying the main storyline.
The relationship between Tris and Four is anything but typical. There are secrets in their pasts, emotional scarring that must be overcome, societal barriers, other people who interfere, not to mention the main "conflict" (but I don't want to spoil it for you). I love a good, dynamic relationship where the characters grow, change and learn from each other as they face challenges. That's how relationships really are - except our challenges don't necessarily effect the whole of society ;)
So, if you like books that are filled with action, adventure, mystery, suspense and even a romance - you need to read Divergent!
