Ties that Bind author interview and giveaway (3 winners/3 copies)

About you as an author:

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always loved to write. Throughout high school and beyond, I was told over and over that I should be a writer, but I resisted. At first, it was because I wanted to be an actress. Later, I was looking for a more “practical” career. It wasn’t until about four years ago that I admitted to myself and the world that writing was very much a part of who I was and who I wanted to be.

How long does it take you to write a book?

The fastest I ever wrote a book was in about three weeks, though I did have to go back and re-write a few things after the fact. The book that took the longest for me to write took a year. That one kept getting interrupted by life! My average is six weeks. After I write, I take a week or two off and then go back to re-read it and make adjustments. I’ll do this a few times if I can. By the time a book makes it to the editor, I like it to be as close to a finished work as possible.

Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?

When I sit down to write, I put in my earbuds and listen to that book’s soundtrack for a while, picturing the next scene or the characters in general while I check in online. After about twenty minutes of chatting in social media sites, I force myself to log off and focus on the characters.

While I do run the risk of losing all track of time and bouncing around the Internet for hours, I’ve found that this time of listening to the right music and only half-thinking about the characters helps me transition from my own chaotic world to my characters’.

When I’m writing, I hate to be disturbed. Even a simple “hello” can set me back to square one and I have to put myself in the right frame of mind all over again.

Before I became a full-time author that meant the best time for me to write was overnight while the rest of the family was asleep. (Which made for lots of stupid typos!) Now, I try to schedule writing time when I know the house will be a little quieter. It doesn’t always work, but I try!

Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?

The stories themselves always originate from a dream, even if indirectly. My most recent release, Devil in Disguise, sprang from a couple of my other novels that sprang from a dream.

The dream is usually just one scene and I wake up the next morning knowing I have another book to write. I jot down what I saw and put it away until it’s time to write that book.

When it’s a particular book’s turn, I pull out the dream and spend time thinking about what’s happening on either side of it. Who are these people and why were they in that particular situation?

As the pieces begin to fall into place, I start to do research for the parts of the storyline I know. Other pieces begin to fall into place from there.

Before I start writing, I research which actors I think fit the characters. Once I’ve picked my actors, I’ll watch movies with them for several days. That helps me picture gestures and mannerisms as the characters interact in my head.

I begin writing when I know the first sentence. Sometimes most of the book is mapped out by that point, but usually I have no clue what’s in store.

How do you decide what you want to write about?

Sometimes I think the stories pick me more than I choose them. When I have a story idea, I type it up and store it on my laptop until it’s that story’s turn. Just this week, I was commenting to my book manager that I have two more to write and then, for the first time that I can remember, I’m not sure which one should come next.

She replied, “Well, what are the options?”

As I started rattling off ideas, it came to me with startling clarity which one I wanted to write next. I don’t know why that particular book is next – it just is.

About you as a person:

What books have most influenced your life?

I’ve been a voracious reader for most of my life, and I believe every book you read impacts you in some way or another, so it’s hard to say which books have influenced me the most. The one that stands out in my mind the most is The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. One of my favorite quotes comes from that novel: “Be true! Be true! Be true! Show freely to the world, if not your worst, yet some trait whereby the worst may be inferred!”

What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?

I have a horrible memory when it comes to reaching too far back into my childhood. I do remember devouring the Mandie book series when I was about eight years old. The first books I remember reading that really stuck with me were Gone with the Wind and The Scarlet Letter when I was around 12.

What are you reading right now?

Gabriel’s Rapture by Sylvain Reynard. I’m only a couple of chapters in, and it’s driving me crazy that I can’t find time to just curl up and finish the book. I read the first book in that series (Gabriel’s Inferno) in one day.)

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I adore my family and spending time with them. We laugh a lot when we’re together, and I think that’s important. I spend a lot of time tending or simply watching my chickens and horses, too. Being around them brings me a lot of peace. I’m just beginning to train a new mare, so I have a sneaking suspicion that’ll take up quite a bit of my free time for the foreseeable future!

What do you think makes a good story?

I can forgive a lot in a story if I like the characters. Conversely, if I can’t understand the choices the characters are making, I tend to forget everything I do like about the story.

Maybe it’s all the years I spent teaching corporate writers to be succinct, but I tend to get to the point when I write. Sometimes I have to slow myself down to offer more descriptions. I struggle with books that are overly descriptive simply for the sake of setting every detail of the scene, though. I think it’s important to find a balance – to set up a scene well while still allowing the readers’ imagination room to play.

The Sound of Love by J. Adams

Blurb-
On the afternoon of her father's burial, nineteen-year-old Talisa Tova is expelled from hTer home by her stepmother. With secret preparations made ahead of time by her father and the emotional support of her stepbrother, Talisa moves on and shapes a life for herself. But her bruised heart is trapped in self-preservation mode, and though she still dreams of one day opening it to someone, her partial deafness convinces her to accept a life without love.

All of this changes when free-spirited Dylan Thomas enters her life.

Dylan Thomas owns the heart of a poet, a trait inherited from his parents, both of whom idolize the works of Dylan Thomas, Lord Byron and Yeats. Having gone through a nasty divorce two years ago, Dylan thought his heart would be closed forever. But that was before his friend introduced him to his sister. The moment Dylan meets Talisa, she claims his heart and his life is changed forever.

Talisa and Dylan still carry hurts that cut deep. Will love give them the strength to heal each other?

Tifferz Take-

You can never go wrong with a story by J.Adams. She creates an emotional and heartwarming story that pulls you in. Jewel will leave you with a happy ever after. Do you believe in love at first sight? Can love heal? You will have to read The Sound of Love to find out. This is a Cinderella retelling that is a novella. It is just right if you only have a little time. I just needed a quick fix during lunch and was left with a smile. I liked how Jewel make this story her own. I like the music and poetry combination. It just seemed to work and is different. This is a clean read no sex or swearing.

Blog Entry:

I was ten when I submitted my first work to Saturday Evening Post, a poem about rain rushing down the gutter (it was immediately rejected). Ever since then, I’ve been a writer. At that time I had visions of my name living on, like Homer who wrote The Iliad.

Since then I’ve become much more realistic. I realized my skills could be used on the job as well as freelancing nonfiction articles. Years of rejection taught me just how difficult it is to get published in any way, shape or form; and it’s been much more difficult to publish fiction. Who knows why I’ve kept at it—probably the occasional publication encouraged me.

A quote from someone--"No one ever said on the deathbed, ‘I wish I had spent more time in the office.’" This is NOT true in my case when it comes to writing. I wish I’d spent more time writing. Where would I have taken the time from? Certainly not my family and friends—they deserve every minute. Not my job or volunteer activities. I guess it would have been to spend less time fooling around or watching tv and more time writing.

Another important lesson I learned in the past few years has been the necessity of REwriting and REwriting and REwriting. I used to think that fiction sprang fully formed from the writer’s mind. Now I know it’s a blend of inspiration, work, critiquing, and more work. This actually is more satisfying because the writer feels part of the process, not just a conduit. I find that almost every piece of fiction I write addresses confronting some sort of fear that’s limiting a main character. I’d like readers to feel that action is worth taking, if just to grow within themselves.

About the Author:

Bonnie McCune credits her tenacity for the successes in her life, and A Saint Comes Stumbling In is proof. Since fifth grade, she has been determined to be a writer. This is her first published novel, but her interest in writing led to her career in nonprofits doing public and community relations and marketing. She’s worked for libraries, directed a small arts organization and managed Denver's beautification program. Simultaneously, she’s been a free lance writer with publications in local, regional, and specialty publications for news and features. Her main interest now is fiction writing, and her pieces have won several awards. Her civic involvement includes grass-roots organizations, political campaigns, writers' and arts' groups, and children's literacy.

For years, she entered recipe contests and was a finalist once to the Pillsbury Cook Off. A special love is live theater. Had she been nine inches taller and thirty pounds lighter, she might have been an actress. For reasons unknown (an unacknowledged optimism?), she believes that one person can make a difference in this world. McCune lives in Denver, Colorado, where she’s been married to the same man forever, has two children and three grandchildren, and is working on a humorous novel about aging.

Blurb about novel:

Can a rejected wife conquer self-doubt, trap a criminal, and win love? A patron saint might help...

Thirty-something Joan Nelson has more to contend with than a biological clock or an identity crisis. Despite her ardent belief in a conventional marriage, she finds herself deserted for a younger, slimmer woman. Lacking any skills or education, she's thrust unprepared into the nightmare challenge of making a living for the first time in her sheltered existence.

A job as a receptionist in a law firm is the first rung on the ladder to her independence. Yet the taste of success sours when Joan considers the emptiness of her personal life. How can she reconstruct her damaged life and heal her bruised ego? Ill-equipped for the singles scene, she embarks on a confusing, sometimes frightening, new lifestyle.

When Joan stumbles on a crime perpetuated by a charming cad, she must defy her boss, jeopardize her newly won stability, and reject her friends. Her namesake, Joan of Arc, provides a model of courage and insight. If she risks danger and uncertainty, will she discover that independence and adulthood can be both enjoyable and fulfilling? Does optimism beat pessimism? Who would have dreamed her final victory could solve a childhood puzzle while it brings her true love?

Excerpt: A Saint Comes Stumbling In

By Bonnie McCune

A persistent chime from the doorbell finally breaks through my musings. Who would come over unannounced? Tempted to ignore the summons, I sidle along the wall so the visitor can’t see me through the window, put an eye to a crack in the curtain. “Kevin!” I throw the door open. “What are you doing here?”

No slob he, Kevin wears an impeccable business suit, pale blue shirt and paisley tie. Even more impressive are his freshly combed hair and congenial greeting. At the end of a long, grueling work day, Kevin bears no signs of fatigue or defeat. Unlike paranoid and depressed me, whose rumpled, dingy sweatsuit, faded from grey into a streaked greige, matches my attitude.

“I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d drop by to discuss several informal offers on the house,” he says.

“In the neighborhood? Get serious. This is miles from your place. You’re a sweetheart to worry about me after I wailed on your shoulder the other day. Come in and have some coffee.”

Turning to go back to the kitchen, I catch just a glimpse of a flush that mounts Kevin’s face. As I move from cupboard to sink to counter, chattering about the computer incident and my fears, I also notice his unusual reticence.

“So you see I’m working off nervous energy as well as preparing to move,” I say with a gesture at the open cupboards and the cups teetering in stacks on the table where Kevin sits. “If I get fired, I couldn’t bear having to pound the pavement again. My ego was totally destroyed. I don’t know which type of rejection I preferred—the unanswering void of some potential employers who didn’t bother to respond to an application or the politely worded rebuffs.”

As if unfolding a letter, I pretend to quote. “We sincerely thank you for applying. Although you met the requirements for the position, we regret to inform you that other candidates were better qualified. Therefore we are unable to offer you the position of ‘you-fill-in-the-blank’. We wish you good luck in your job search.”

Kevin shakes his head so emphatically he destroys his combing job. “You can’t let rejection discourage you. I get dozens of rejections every day. How could I ever close a sale if I allowed the no’s to slow me down?”

I return to my cupboard. “Easy for you to say. I was desperate for a job. James had walked out and I had no income when my mother alerted me to the opening at the law firm. I was grateful for her assistance. Pride prevented me from asking James or my family for financial help. I found pride was the last quality I needed after seven weeks of hopeless, fruitless inquiry. I couldn’t bear to go through the process again.”

Three shelves in the cupboards are clear. I look at the stack of miscellaneous mugs heaped on the top shelf and decide to discard them. An array of assorted colors and sizes, they proclaim cute sayings on their sides such as, “If you think today was bad, wait until tomorrow,” and, “Keep your paws off!” or “Mondays are God’s punishment for weekends.”

I shudder as I climb on a stool for a better look. James and I used to exchange the mugs regularly on birthdays, a kind of contest to see which one could find the ugliest or rudest. Until two years before the break-up, I suddenly realize. Another subtle sign of the disintegration of my marriage. I don’t need them as reminders.

Kevin’s voice breaks into my thoughts. “You won’t have to worry for long.”

I poke into another assortment that has been hidden at the very rear of the cupboard. “What do you mean?” I ask.

“About supporting yourself. Surely you have a very good friend waiting in the wings.”

Whirling around on the stool where I stand, I nearly fall over. I hook five or six mugs firmly over my fingers, clamber down, and advance on Kevin while brandishing the dishware. “Listen, mister, James is the charmer, the con man, the one with the sweetie-pie, not me. Was that way in school, remember? Every time I turned around, I had to pry him out of the hold of some adoring females, after a basketball game when he’d made a winning basket, hanging out in the park during the summers. Evidently, no difference after he finished college and started in business either. Don’t ask, don’t tell was my philosophy. I didn’t probe or spy. And I never was unfaithful to him, before or during marriage, and I resent your implication.”

Kevin recoils and leans back as far as possible in his chair. “Sorry. I’m the best one to know you weren’t. I don’t know why I said that.”

“What do you mean, you’re the best one to know?”

“Don’t you remember the pass I made at you just before you got married? The summer after high school?”

Thoroughly bewildered, I shake my head.

Kevin stands, puts his cup on the table, shoves his hands in his pockets, thereby disarranging his suited perfection. “Not an incident to be proud of, to put moves on a friend’s girl. The party when James had to leave because his dad was out of town and his mom called to say his little sister was sick? He left and I got you in a corner to nuzzle?”

I lower my arms to my sides, still holding the mugs. The action matches my dropping jaw. “That was a pass?”

Kevin is motionless, as if my comment is sinking into his consciousness, until he throws back his head and laughs. “I don’t know whether to be offended you found me so inept or grateful you haven’t resented my action all these years.”

“I thought you were just practicing. Everyone necked constantly with anyone in reach. They were like puppies or kittens squirming around to learn about their bodies. I didn’t know you were serious.”

“And if you had known?” Kevin asks. A silence stretch between us. I don’t know where to look, so I stare at my toes. “Ah, well, now is not the time for what-ifs. We’re all grown up. Like a brother and sister, right?” He reaches for some of the mugs to help pack them.

“If you hold it, you keep it,” I warn. “These are discards.”

“One. Only one,” Kevin says, touching my hand lightly with all his fingertips. “So, there’s no one in your life?”

Now it’s my turn to flush. “Well, a guy in the offices at work is interesting. We haven’t gone out, though.”

Kevin’s fingers grasp one particularly grotesque mug which resembles a stony gargoyle. “This will do as a memento. Time for me to take off.”

“I thought you were going to tell me about some offers,” I protest.

“Until earnest money’s involved, an offer’s not serious. No, don’t bother,” he says when I make motions as if to walk him to the door. “I’ll find my way out.”

From Fame to Shame by Veronica Blade

check out Veronica Blade's website here

Blurb-
When good-girl Maddie switches places with her famous bad-girl twin Jackie, she has some pretty high stilettos to fill.

Despite the danger of tabloid drama if their identity swap is discovered, Maddie has to save her sister's butt. When Jackie’s ex-boyfriend shows up with a rekindled spark for “Jackie,” his deep gray eyes and sweet kisses make Maddie's heart thumpety thump. But dating the guy who dumped her sister is a no-no. Too bad Dallas isn’t used to girls saying no. What will happen when he discovers Maddie’s deception?

Tifferz Take-
This is my first read from Veronica Blade and will not be my last! I always like the idea of twins switching places and Ms. Blade did an exceptional job with this story. I was hooked within the first chapter and refused to put this down till it was completed. I like Maddie right off the bat. She goes around al natural and in tennis shoes. Maddie is fun, sweet, kind and is trying not to like her sister's ex-boyfriend Dallas. It is fun to watch her help Jackie. Jackie is Maddie's complete opposite. Complete with five inch heals, makeup and the wardrobe to boot. Well sparks fly and you will have to see how things turn out for Dallas, Maddie and Jackie! I finished reading this well written story with a smile on my face. If you like Susan Hatler you will like Veronica Blade. I will be reading more from her because I loved this read. I would like Ms. Blade to write the other twin's story! This is a clean no sex read. It does contain a handful of swear words.

Thoughtless by Jacqueline Gardner

check out more from Ms. Gardner here- http://www.jacquelinegardner.com/

Blurb-
When Bridget finds a dead cheerleader in the janitor’s closet, she becomes the killer’s next target. High school just got worse. It’s bad enough that she can hear the shocking truths that pass through her classmate’s heads. Now she has to worry about staying alive, and all clues point to the one person whose thoughts she can’t read - her boyfriend Terrence. Someone is taunting her, threatening to expose her secret. And when Bridget tries to single out her blackmailer, she’s nearly beaten to death by a mind controlled minion with fiery eyes.

But when Bridget finally comes face-to-face with the killer, suddenly a horde of brainwashed students programmed to destroy her life doesn’t seem so bad.

Tifferz Take-
Ms. Gardner has created a unique story that captured me within the first handful of pages. I wanted to figure out who was the killer and why. Bridget is a very like able and I thought acted much like a normal teenage. Yet Bridget is different and doesn't want anyone to find out. I would feel like the same way. I think everyone has moments when they fear rejection.  I had mixed feelings about Terrence. I was like Rory, I had lots of questions about him. I found myself consumed by this story. I had to have answers. So, my laundry and dishes sat till I completed this story. When I finished I instantly wanted to read book two as this is going to be a series. But I was also happy to have my answers. My one complaint is the time frame. I wish it was a little clearer. Other than that I think this is a great story and quiet unique and I am sure with the next book Ms. Gardner writes will be even better. This is clean free from sex and only a handful of swear words.

His Chosen Bride by Sherry Gloag

blurb-
Prince Henri Gasquet is happy to let his father, the king, choose his bride for him, until he meets Monica Latimer.

Monica Latimer is not prepared to risk letting any man close enough to learn about her Gift. A gift that normally has men running for the hills when they find out about it.

What will happen when both mindsets are challenged?

Tifferz Take-
I really like Monica and her Gift she has to help others! How cool is that? I think pretty cool.  I also like Henri and understand him having a hard time being force to take a break and wanting to blame someone. I liked the tension between Henri and Monica. I did feel that Henri was a bit fickle with his feelings. But he seemed to work that out in the end. I sure hope that Ms. Gloag has plans to write the Henri's younger twins stories. I felt she did a great job of setting that up toward  the end of the story. This is a sweet romance so it does not have any swearing or sex. This was a fun read and I read it in one sitting. If you love romance and don't have tons of time then this may be the read for you.

New Release and Giveaway!

Blurb-
"I release you..." were the last words Rosalind remembered before her world went black. Stefan, the future duke of Montmouth, no doubt thought his words were welcomed but he couldn't have been more wrong. Oh, he was handsome as a pagan Norse god, but that was unimportant when her life as well as those of her family hung in the balance.

With less than six weeks left, Rosalind has stopped believing in the fairy tale, the prince on the white horse, and the stolen kiss that would awaken her from her worst nightmares. Resigned to her fate, she waits for the inevitable curse to run it’s course.

"We must marry at once!" Stefan declared, fully expecting Rosalind to be delighted that he had come to save her, but he was sorely mistaken. Rosalind was no simpering docile female; she was a fiery temptress with a stubborn streak only matched by his horse, Samson. Insulting, infuriating, intoxicating and alluring enough to drive a man mad. Stefan found himself thankful for the curse that required him marry her, thankful for the betrothal contract he had so recently tried to release her from...With the fortitude of a sailor shipwrecked, abandoned, and a solider warring for his life Stefan decides to lay siege to the greatest prize, Rosalind's heart.

Sarah's Bounty by Terri Crews

Blurb-
There are some things money can’t buy…

It was no better than kidnapping! Besides, women came with too many issues. Dubious, T.J. Blake refuses the request to retrieve the daughter of a wealthy widow. But when the tune of five thousand dollars dances in his ears, he quickly changes his mind. Surely this woman’s daughter can't be as bad as her snobbish mother. And if she was, he’d have the rope ready.

There’s only one condition to retrieving the stubborn beauty in question—Sarah is to be delivered untouched. After a lifetime of dealing with outlaws of the worst kind, surely Blake can escort one woman across the country without giving into temptation. He has five thousand reasons to ensure it will be an easy task. But Blake doesn’t bank on the value of his heart being worth far more than Sarah’s Bounty...

All that Sarah knows changes the night she is grabbed. Filled with questions, anger and hurt at discovering her whole life has been a lie, Sarah resolves to find out why her natural mother would abandon her to be raised in a saloon while she lives a life of luxury.

To gain the answers she seeks, she calls a truce with her kidnapper, agreeing to follow his rules. To ward off suspicion, they pretend to be man and wife. But how far will the role go? Why couldn’t her captor have been hideous? Blake causes stirrings in Sarah she’s never felt before and soon she has a request of her own. Only when she’s denied the second kiss she’s so curious about does she face the truth—is the promised payout worth more to Blake than her love?

Tifferz Take-
This is a sweet story about forgiveness, second chances, first love mixed with mystery and some creepy and not too smart villains. This story has so unexpected surprises I was not expecting!  I love how feisty Sarah is and yet she is really strong mixed with some stubbornness. I also love that she is quick to forgive.
Amanda has had to make some tough choices in life and has learned from them. I think she is very stubborn. I like when she gets her wake up call.
Blake I can't think of anything I don't like about him! The witty banter between Sarah and Blake will put a smile on your face. I also love that Sarah will stand up for what she believes in.
This story is wonderful and I was happy and sad when it ended. I felt like I was saying goodbye to some good friends. I will be reading it again and again it because it was a great story! I love the happy ending!
I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I did! It is clean no sex just a few swear words.

The Togetherness Routine by Pearce

Blurb-
Some relationships are meant to be - but why doesn’t your family understand? If you have been going with someone since kindergarten and grown up together and it feels so right, it must be right. To split up leaves a big gaping hole in your life that feels very wrong. Nobody can possibly understand what you are going through when you are so alone and isolated. Why do families think they can be of help when they have caused your life to mess up in the first place?

Tifferz Take-
I think that Ms. Pearce has done an outstanding job of capturing the characters in this book. I felt like Gail acted like a normal fourteen year old girl. I could see her point of view perfectly. I also thought that her mom and step father were looking out for her and I would have done something similar as a parent. I did like the dynamics with Kelvin and Garry. Such a fun book that had me laughing, getting misty eyed and just plain happy. I am still thinking about this story many days later. I think that Ms. Pearce should write book two as I would love to see how things play out for Gail. I would recommend this fantastic story that left me happy but wanting more.

Telsea The Covenant Keeper by Lani Wendt Young

Author Bio

I was born and raised in Samoa. I went to university in the USA and New Zealand, studying English Literature, Women's Studies and Education. Back in Samoa I worked as a secondary school English teacher for 7 years and did lots of writing in between for the local newspaper and for myself. My short fiction has been published in Samoa, NZ, Australia and the UK. My collection of short stories "Sleepless in Samoa" won the 2011 USP Press Fiction Award. I also write stories for children that are used in primary school reading programs. In 2009 I was commissioned by Hans Joe Keil to research and write the narrative non-fiction book 'Pacific Tsunami Galu Afi'. The book was funded by the Australian Govt Aid program and all book sale profits go back to tsunami survivors who were interviewed for the record. My book 'TELESA The Covenant Keeper' is the first in a YA urban fantasy series and it was launched in Oct 2011. I'm married to Darren Young (who is probably the most patient and most hottest man alive) and we have five children ranging in age from 4 to 16yrs. We are now based in New Zealand but get to go home to Samoa enough to keep me brown. (and broke.) I blog about the misadventures of a (slightly demented) Domestic Goddess over at Sleepless in Samoa.

YA Fantasy Romance

Date Published: June 2012

Synopsis:

Leila returns to the land of her birth in search of family and instead discovers she is heir to a fiery elemental birthright...all while navigating through the drama of a new high school with the help of her new best friend "Simone daahling" - a boy with flawless makeup and the catwalk style of Kate Moss. She is introduced to the national sport of rugby and meets an irritating boy that would be much easier to hate if he didn't have chipped emerald eyes that are always laughing at her and a glorious golden smile. (The glistening, bronzed abs and Pacific warrior tattoos don't help either.) There's hate, love, jealousy, volcanoes and lots of delicious Samoan food in Leila's coming-of-age journey as she realizes that ancient Pacific myths of elemental spirit women Telesa, contain more truth than fiction. Secrets are revealed and things get blown up as Leila must choose between sisterhood and the boy she loves. Can their love stand against the Covenant Keeper?

There are many different kinds of love. All of them require sacrifice. Who will give everything for the one they love?

A thriller-romance with a difference. If you enjoyed Twilight, then you will be enthralled by Telesa as it blends the richness (and humor) of Pacific mythology into a contemporary young adult love story that will stay with you long after you have turned the final page.

" Tired of vampires and werewolves? TELESA has a supernatural element but a unique one... Like Air Benders and X-Men combined. Way cool. The Telesa women are an environmental terrorist group that wield their elemental powers with a fierce beauty and devastating impact..."

Nafanua regarded me with pity in her eyes. “Leila, this is a part of you. This is who you are. I’m sorry, your powers are not going to go away, no matter how much you may want them to.”

I was hostile. “How the hell do you know that?”

Nafanua did not speak. She stood and walked the few steps out the open front doors and down the verandah steps. I followed her, confused as to her intentions. Almost lazily, she beckoned with her right hand and out of a blank blue sky, thunder clapped loud enough to make me jump. Another hand flicked gracefully and white light jagged, crackled and hissed as lightning seared the ground beside her. I gripped the verandah rails for support, my mind struggling to accept what I was seeing. Nafanua spun in a soft circle and the lightning burned out a path around her. When the circle was complete she stopped and stepped out of the smoke, brushing a stray piece of cindered grass off her skirt. She looked straight at me.

“I know because I am telesā. And you are my daughter. I am matagi. Storm. Air. Wind. Lightning. You are fanua. Earth. Blessed with earth’s fire. And your gift is not going to go away, no matter what you do or where you live. It’s part of who you are and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you can get the help you need to make sure that you don’t hurt anyone. Unless you want to that is.” She half smiled and walked slowly towards me. I slid to sit on the wooden step.

The morning sunlight danced over the garden and a blue kingfisher sat on the wood railing and regarded me with dark eyes. It was supposed to be another day in paradise. Yesterday I had kissed a beautiful boy that a girl like me could only dream about. Today, here I was, watching the woman who was my mother call down lightning from the sky and burn circles of fire in the grass.

A Piece from TELESA:The Covenant Keeper. By Lani Wendt Young.

“No … please … how to stop it? How can I stop it?”

I burst into useless tears. Tears that fizzed and hissed in a heartbeat of heat. No amount of crying would help now. I wrung my hands, no way out of it. It was hopeless. In a few minutes I would be a mass murderer. A killer. In my mind’s eye, I could see it now. People on fire running in circles, frantically beating at the hungry flames. The smell of flesh scorching, peeling off ashy bone. Screams. Pleas for help. I sank to my knees, drained dry of strength. Unwilling to watch the carnage but unable to take my eyes away. I was drowning in a sea of fiery despair. Suffocating in a red night of terror.

A clear, calm voice spoke from beside me. “Leila. Call it back. You can do it. Call it back. Call it back NOW.”

I looked up, eyes glistening with molten tears. He stood as close to me as he dared, shielding his face from the heat with his hands, the edges of his clothes singed and charred.

“I can’t.” Abject despair in my voice. “I don’t know how.”

“Yes you can. You have the power. You know you do. You spoke to it before. It listens to you. Call it back now before it’s too late. Please.”

It was the ‘please’ that did it. That snapped me out of the depths. He wanted me to call the fire. He believed that I could. And I wanted him to believe in me. Slowly, I raised myself from the ground, closed my eyes and willed that fiery beast to come home.

To listen to me – its mistress. To return and feed instead on my molten core. I trembled at the very thought of the blaze finding its way back. How could I possibly summon it all when it had grown so exponentially as it fed? But this was my fault. I had to find the strength from somewhere. I opened my eyes and shuddered at the majesty of the sight before me.

Directly ahead of me was a massive wall of fire. It had stopped advancing across the field and now it stood waiting; the beast waited for my command. Now – it asked – what would you have me do? Opening my arms, every ounce of my being quivering with fear, I summoned it home.

I burned. Inside and out. I burned. There was indescribable pain and the knife edge of pleasure. It was ecstasy and hell all at once. Then, as swiftly as it had begun, it stopped.

I was empty. A dried husk scorched beyond belief. Withered and dead. I fell.

The steaming darkness claimed me.

Master of Roads by Amy Keeley

blurb-
A desperate woman. An awful bargain. "Master of Roads" is a tale of duty fighting love; of the judgment of gods, and the hope of mortals. Which will win?

Tifferz Take-
Master of roads is a great short story about a young woman who is to be married and she wants out. I liked all the emotion that Leani feels and expresses. I think that this would be an awesome full length novel as I want to see how Leani's life plays out. I think the author does a good job of describing things and building the characters. This is a delightful read for those of you who don't have tons of time. It did leave me wanting more.
