Whispered Music by Rachel Van Dyken

Whispered Music (London Fairy Tales, #2)
 Blurb~
Scarred at a young age, Dominique Maksylov, Royal Prince of Russia, has lived a reclusive life. As a musical prodigy, his music has wide reach into the world, but few ever see his face. He never ventures into polite society, but when he dis-covers he is the only heir to the Earldom of Harriss, he goes to one ball. And that one ball, was enough to change the direction of his life forever.
But how could he possibly have known that other person— the other half of his whole—would not only need his help but threaten his very existence?

She didn’t know how hard it would be to love the broken.
Isabelle Hartwell’s mother just sold her to the Beast of Russia. He’s mean, tem-peramental, and the most virile, handsome man she has ever encountered. But he has a secret, one he’s willing to die for and he refuses to let anyone in. Will she be able to reach his heart before it’s too late?

Find out if love prevails in this regency retelling of how Beauty tamed the savage Beast…

Tifferz Take~
I am enjoying Rachel Van Dyken's London Fairy Tale series! I also like how each story sets up the next story in the series.  I think this could be a stand alone book. But it is much better when read in the series order. This story is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast and Ms. Van Dyken makes this story her own. Dominique endured a traumatic childhood and has both physical and emotional scars. Dominique has his moments of being a Beast aka jerk. I kinda liked that he was not perfect. I really like Isabella she is a real trooper and seems to go with what is thrown her way. She also does not give up and when she loves she gives all her heart! The story is written from both Dominique's and Isabelle's perspective. I felt those transitions were seamless. I liked how we get to see inside both characters heads. I loved when  Isabelle and Dominique realize they love the other. I also loved the ball. That is just really romantic and sweet. Overall a very enjoyable read.  We also get to see a lot of Hunter, Dominique's best friend. Oh my goodness I can't wait to read Hunter and Gwen's story.

Just FYI~
This story does have some bedroom scenes that are a bit steamy with minimal description. Normally any bedroom scene this author writes is behind closed doors but the door is open a bit in this book. But the book does not contain any swear words.

Daughter of the King
by Carlene Havel

A heartwarming story about the resilience of true love, inspired by a biblical account of greatness, courage, and foretold prophecy...

Princess Michal was the youngest daughter of Saul, the first king of Israel.  In an age when fathers arranged marriages, Michal dared to fall in love with a handsome young musician named David, from the little town of Bethlehem.  As recounted in the Bible, Michal helped David escape from her insanely jealous father.  King Saul punished his daughter with forced marriage to a distant war lord.  Princess Michal unexpectedly returns from seven years of exile to find a changed world. Most of her relatives are dead.  David has become King of Judea.  He has acquired six additional wives, one of whom is a princess from Geshur. Michal longs to have a son to reign over Israel and reestablish the rule of King Saul's heirs.   But each royal wife has hopes of placing her own son on the throne.  Can Princess Michal's love for King David survive war, madness, infidelity, and betrayal?

Excerpt:

“You’re not taking my wife anywhere!” Phaltiel bellowed. He struggled to break free from the soldiers who restrained him.

“Then we will take your widow.” The soldier tossed an unconcerned glance in Phaltiel’s direction. “It makes no difference to me.” He turned to the woman standing nearby. “You will come with us.”

“I shall make preparations for a journey of how many days?” Michal struggled to keep her voice calm. The daughter of the king must not show fear.

“We cannot waste time with preparations.” Captain Osh sat straight and tall on his horse. “We will leave as soon as—”

“There must be some mistake,” Phaltiel’s chief steward interrupted. “King Saul himself gave his daughter to my lord Phaltiel.”

“King Saul no longer reigns.” Osh glared at the steward. “He is as dead as you and I will be if we fail to deliver the woman Michal soon.”

Michal addressed her handmaid. “Come, Tirzah, we will gather a few things quickly.” She felt the stares of soldiers all the way across the courtyard and braced herself for the thrust of a spear in her back.

“We have endured two days of hard riding, Phaltiel.” The authoritative ring of the Captain’s voice filled the courtyard. “Feed my men and see to our animals.”

Michal breathed deeply to maintain her composure. Was it true her father, King Saul, was dead? Was it possible her dear brother, Jonathan, was now king of Israel? Was there a rebellion? A foreign invasion? Were soldiers, like those in the courtyard, even now rounding up her sister, Merab, and her family? She knew an insurgent ruler could never risk her or her sister’s royal blood flowing into the veins of a legitimate heir.

Michal forced down her fear as she walked toward the women’s living area. She prayed for courage as she concentrated on keeping her steps steady on the tamped earth of the courtyard.

The clapping of the chief steward’s hands broke the tension. Servants grabbed water jars to fill the stone drinking trough for the military animals. Others stoked the kitchen fire and made preparations for the soldiers’ meal. Lord Phaltiel’s senior wife, Bida, stood watching the activity. Such excitement rarely intruded upon the mundane life of Gallim.

Michal quickened her steps to push through the crowd of Phaltiel’s wives, children, and servants streaming into the courtyard. Once indoors, she fought to focus on which of her few possessions she should take.

“Tirzah, fetch the coat. I’ll carry it under my cloak. Look through my old robes in Bida’s chest, and choose one which clearly identifies me as the king’s married daughter. I’ll take one additional change of clothing and my sewing box.” She looked around her. “There’s nothing else in this house I ever want to see again. You can keep everything else.”

Tirzah’s eyes widened in horror. “You would not leave me behind?”

Michal clasped her servant’s slender hand. “There’s no reason to drag you into whatever awaits me. If my father is truly dead, these men may well be delivering me to an enemy. Maybe even the Philistines.”

“Better to suffer with you than to stay in this Godless house alone.” Tirzah’s tears spilled onto her cheeks. “Please, my lady, I beg you on my mother’s bones, let me go with you.”

Michal wavered. Tirzah had been her companion since the two of them were children. “All right. You may come with us. The Captain said it was a two-day ride to wherever they came from. Of course, that may not be true. Try to get us some food to take along. Some dates and goat cheese would be best.” Tirzah brightened and brushed away her tears as Michal continued. “Anything you can learn from the soldiers or the other women may be useful. We need to know who has taken King Saul’s place and where we are going.”

“Yes, my lady. I will do as you say.”

Michal straightened. “While you do your duty, I will do mine.”

With everyone else outside—their attention fastened on the soldiers in the courtyard—Michal swept quickly through the women’s rooms. She gathered the many idols and teraphims, the superstitious god figurines that sat everywhere.

As a girl, she participated in religious activities meant to convince the king’s subjects of the royal family’s devotion to the Living God. She went mindlessly through the motions of the familiar rituals, paying no attention to their deeper meaning. The devout faith of her husband David made her more thoughtful. Yet it was only when she was thrust into a life of misery that Michal was forced to trust the one God of Israel.

Her family, alienated. Her husband, bargained away years ago. Michal stiffened her resolve against such sorrowful thoughts lest they overtake her.

She would concentrate on being grateful the soldiers did not murder her in the sight of Phaltiel and his hateful wives.

Perhaps the soldiers would kill her as soon as they were a little distance from Phaltiel’s compound. Or someone could creep near in tonight’s darkness and dispatch her and poor Tirzah in their sleep.

Michal shivered at the thought of other possibilities. The prospect of torture frightened her. A quick death would be an answer to prayer. Some conqueror might be planning a public execution of King Saul’s family. Even the ultimate humiliation of a forced marriage to an uncircumcised heathen could await her. She gathered her courage to bear whatever she must.

In the beginning of her exile, Michal feared some stranger would bring the information King Saul had successfully tracked down and murdered her beloved husband David. When did she hear the news? Their tenth month in Phaltiel’s household, a slave trader stopped to obtain water for his pack animals. From the traveler, Michal’s handmaid Sarah heard that David and his loyal followers still hid in wilderness areas, protecting isolated farms from thieves and marauders. Sarah reported to Michal how the man laughed, showing his fine white teeth, when recounting King Saul’s irrational fear of his own son-in-law.

Years passed with no new information. Then one day Tirzah was cleaning the hearth in the kitchen when the women from a band of wandering wool merchants came to warm themselves. Hearing familiar words, Tirzah realized the travelers were Judeans. Their country was now being ruled by David, they said. Everyone was prospering under his progressive benevolence. Yes, their king was that same legendary David who, armed only with a slingshot, had in his youth fought and killed the Philistine giant Goliath.

Michal was overjoyed to learn her husband had so far evaded the dark furies of her father, King Saul. She gave thanks that her personal sacrifice to save David was not in vain. Was it possible that he still survived to this day? If so, she was certain some other woman occupied her place in his warm embrace by now.

A startling thought invaded Michal’s consciousness as she prepared to go with the soldiers. Perhaps protocol would demand the presence of King David of Judea at a festival given by the new ruler of Israel. Was it possible she might glimpse her adored husband’s face once more before her life ended? She must not break down before David’s eyes if some heathen ordered her torn to pieces by a wild animal.

Michal took the worthless gods she collected and dumped them on her bed. The crude clay pieces shattered easily when she smacked them against each other. So much for Shapash. One slender figurine snapped in two when she laid it across her knee and applied her full strength to its head and feet. She took her sharpest knife and defaced the other two pieces of wood. The pagans of this house would soon see how powerless their stupid idols were.

Tifferz Take~
I am a huge fan of Susan Hatler, so it is always a joy to read anything by her. This is a excellent read for when you don't have a lot of time! Ellen is really fun, organized and practical. I enjoyed seeing how this girl thinks. Okay so Ms. Hatler is know for having me laugh so hard my tummy hurts! So, I was laughing at the situation Ellen gets herself into with Craig. Craig is a peace of work. That is all I have to say about him. I liked Rachel and her dog. I about died with the dog chewing the shoes. I love shoes and would have cried if a dog chewed one up. Now Henry I liked how Ms. Hatler give him mystery and that he leaves a lasting impression! I have to tell ya all I am still thinking about this sweet story weeks later and am itching to read it again! A must read and a thank you to you Ms. Hatler for another  memorable read! Unmasking Maya and Guest post

Blurb~
Defamed, Disgraced and Displaced...

Fresh from a career-killing scandal, New York fashion girl, Maya Kirkwood, arrives in San Francisco to reinvent herself as a fine artist. She's offered the opportunity to create an installation at the Silicon Valley headquarters of a hot new tech company. Fabulous, right?

Not so much.

She can't stand Derek Whitley - wunderkind software genius and CEO of the company. Hot as he may be on the outside, inside the man is a cold, unemotional, robotic type. Way too left-brained for her right-brained self.

As Maya and Derek get to know each other, however, their facades begin to crack. She catches her first glimpse of the man behind the superhuman tech prodigy, and he starts to see her as the woman she used to be. But is this a good thing? Once that last secret is revealed, will it bring them closer together or will it tear them apart?

Tifferz Take~
Unmasking Maya was such a fantastic read for me. It was a different read for me. I loved that  Ms. Mercer created Maya and Derek and they both have issues and I would not have thought they would get together. But as they say opposites attract. I also love that I get inside the mind of an artist and see how a techy guy can be geeky but is not always a nerd. And hey some nerds ie Derek is a hottie! Maya and Derek do both have some past issues they need to deal with and I enjoyed seeing the layers of the past peeled away. One of my favorite scenes is when Maya is walking up a hill in S.F. in heels and Derek just picks her up and carries her up the hill. Another favorite is them rolling down the hill. I think it is great when people think out side the box and enjoy some of the simple things in life. I think Ms. Mercer adds that to her story and some of the unexpected. I know I will be looking to read more from Ms. Mercer as Unmasking Maya really stood out to me. It was fresh and original fun read. I would recommend this to anyone!

Just fyi~ Unmasking Maya contains two swear words and NO sex.

Guest Post!!!

Tifferz, thank you so much for having me here today. I’m thrilled to be on the blog, and I’d like to talk titles today.

When I first came up with the idea for Unmasking Maya, I had my heart set on Harlequin, Mills & Boon’s Riva line as the publisher. I knew they had a marketing department that (more often than not) changed the author’s title to something else, so I wasn’t too worried about coming up with a great title. And since so many of HM&B’s titles are structured in this way: this & that, as in The Bridesmaid and the Billionaire or The Privileged and the Damned (love that one!) I chose Silk Chiffon and Silicon Valley as my working title.

However. By the time I finished the manuscript, I knew it wasn’t right for HM&B. I decided to self-publish the story, which meant I had to come up with a fabulously catchy title. And I hate coming up with titles.

I spent days attempting to pull something awesome out of my brain. Weeks, even. I researched, I free-associated, and I dug deep. Nothing. Some of my favorite titles are funky takes on well-known phrases and terms, such as: Misery Loves Cabarnet, The Kitchen Shrink and The Misfortune Cookie. So I spent a day Googling phrases and sayings. Still nothing. I then started looking up song titles. Must have read through thousands of them, but not a single one seemed right. Finally I busted out with my giant film encyclopedia to search titles. I actually came up with several great book titles by slightly altering film titles, but sadly, none of them would work with my current project.

After all that effort, I only had one possible title that I liked: But Robots Can’t Cuddle. I think it’s cute, catchy and intriguing, but it didn’t fit the story. It was too flippant. The situation seemed absolutely hopeless.

And suddenly the clouds parted! One of my online author pals, Dina Silver, offered to help me out. She used to work in advertising, so she knows her stuff. I emailed her the basics right away. Told her it was a romance/chick lit hybrid and included my free association words: art, fashion, in cognito, geek chic, love, unemotional, reinvention, tech and robotic, among others. Dina got back to me with a whopping 22 possibilities! I went over the list and narrowed it down, tweaked a few titles, posted the contenders on my blog and sent out a plea for opinions.

My online pals came through, big time. The title that got the most votes was Reinventing Maya, followed by Masquerading as Maya. I was a bit hesitant about calling it Reinventing Maya because it sounded so much like Reinventing Mona by Jennifer Coburn. And then the lovely Martha Reynolds, another online author pal, posted her thoughts. She had already read an earlier version of the manuscript, and pointed out that Unmasking Maya might be more in keeping with the plot than Masquerading as Maya.

Eureka! Martha was right. Unmasking Maya beautifully captures one of the story’s key themes. And it still provides a bit of alliteration that the fans of Masquerading as Maya were fond of.

And there you have it. My story has a name and I can rest peacefully – until it comes time to title my next book, that is.

The Devil Duke Takes a Bride by Rachel Van Dyken

The Devil Duke Takes a Bride (The House of Renwick, #4)
Blurb~

Who said being bad wasn't oh so good?

Benedict Devlyn, Duke of Banbury, has one thing on his mind and it isn't marriage. But things take a turn for the worse when his menacing aunt throws a hitch in his plans to remain the most sinful and talked about man in the ton. After all, a man cannot keep the reputation of being The Devil Duke when he is leg-shackled to some simpering spinster.
But his aunt, bless her heart, thinks she's dying, and believes her nephew’s behavior is the only thing standing in the way between her entrance to heaven or hell. So she very lovingly and selflessly sets him up. With his childhood nemesis.

A young woman who, though she claims it was an accident, has nearly killed him thrice through her lack of grace and manners. It matters not that the minute he sets eyes on her at the Christmas ball, his blood boils with lust. He refuses to allow himself to fall prey to his aunt’s ministrations.

That is, until he is compromised and stuck in an engagement to a girl who claims she'd rather jump from a moving carriage than marry him. Funny thing that, for the very minute she says no, he finds his heart very much wants to say yes. When she doesn't leap at the chance to marry him, he sets about to not only prove that he's worthy of her favor, but also worthy of her heart.

Tifferz Take~
Rachel Van Dyken has done it again!   The Devil Duke Takes a Bride is a dazzling story that has lingered with me and will be read again! It is has the following and more~ witty banter, laughter, many scandals, hope, love, lots of mistakes, remorse, stolen kisses and a sneaky aunt Agatha. Ms. Van Dyken has weaved a heartfelt story that is fun but grows a bit complex! I totally fell in love with this sassy story. Katherine had me laughing oh the thins this girl does! She is also strong, sassy and clumsy! The Devil Duke is such a rouge, but he is so much more. I think he grew and learned through the story. I found aunt Agatha to be a delightful addition to this story. She is outrageous, full of love and sharp! It is always luxury to read a story by Rachel Van Dyken. I look forward to reading Baldwyn's story! Hope you plan on writing it!

FYI~ this does not contain any sex or swearing!

ReAwakened is the second book in the Angel Creek series and I think you need to read the books in order. They are not stand one books in my opinion. Okay so I think ReAwakened was a phenomenal read! Ms. Adams has captured me as a reader and taken me on an adventure I will never forget. The story is filled with the unforeseen.  I felt a connection to Dawn,Sebastian, Razor and all the others. I felt as if I was in the story along side them. Ms. Adams has a way of apprehending me as a reader until the last page is read. After I finished I was left thinking I will never last waiting for the next book. I need it now! Over all a series that should not be overlooked and I highly recommend the Angel Creek Series by Ada Adams. ReVamped is book #1. I can't wait to get my hands on book 3.

I would also LOVE it if Ms. Adams would do Razor's story maybe a spin off novel? I'm not sure she has planned but I do think that would make an amazing story!

FYI~ This does have a few swear words but no sexual situations. It does have descriptive violence and well written it did not bother me and I am sensitive to that kind of stuff.

SOME OF ADA"S FAVORITE QUOTES FROM ReAwakened!!
Coming up with quotes was hard! I tried to choose some spoiler-free ones that show the characters’ personalities and interactions. I was pretty much a fan of anything Razor said, especially his interactions with Dawn and Sebastian. I also loved Brooke and Seth’s bickering, as well as the rare times Hunter spoke. I loved letting the readers get to know him more in “ReAwakened”. I also loved all Dawn and Sebastian moments, although I haven’t quoted many – I’m leaving those up to the readers to discover! :)

“Dawn Fairchild! I never pegged you for a cheater!”
“You cheated first!”
“How so?”
“By smiling at me.”
“I cheated by smiling?”
“It’s such a rare occurrence—I almost drowned from sheer surprise.”

“With you, things never feel hazy. I’m always wide awake. Alive.”

“Are we going to do this again?”
“Do what?”
“The damsel-in-distress and knight-in-shining armor bit.”
“That's not how I see us. I told you before, you're no damsel. You're more like a butt-kicking dragon. Plus, I've worn armor before, and trust me, it's not my style.”

Razor Boy and Dagger Girl—it’s brilliant! We’re like an old-school crime-fighting team.

"Love isn't supposed to be complicated, Dawn. If it is, then you're doing it wrong.”

“I’m not sure what kind of a doctorly image you have of me, but I can assure you that I was never the Good Doctor,” he said, winking. “Although, I’ve always been good at my craft. I’m rather great with my hands. As for my bedside manners—”

“Sebastian could be a puppy,” Razor said, smirking at me. “A love-sick puppy.”
“And you could be a jerk,” Sebastian shot back. “No costume required.”

“Every year, during the first Saturday of October, all of Main Street closes and the buildings turn into haunted houses. You make your way up the street, going into each one, screaming your head off, running for your life—”
“Uhh, how is this any different from what we’ve been doing for the past couple of months?” Seth asked.
Brooke groaned. “Because it’s not real! It’s supposed to be fun!”
“I can do fun,” I said, trying my best to sound excited. I think.
Brooke didn’t look very convinced. “Whatever you do Dawn, please don’t karate chop any of the masked actors,” she begged as the rest of the group laughed.

“We’re back at square one,” I admitted, repressing a defeated sigh.
“I’m pretty sure that now we’re at square negative one,” Brooke grumbled.
“You just made a math joke, Brooke.” Seth couldn’t hide the smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “There may still be hope for you yet.”

I could fight real. But I had no weapons against the imaginary.

“Dawn…?”
“Yes?”
“You’re pretty cool when you’re not cracking the whip in the training arena.”
“Thanks, Hunter. You’re pretty cool when you’re actually talking.”

Razor chuckled. “Don’t forget the part where I lined the rafters with buckets of blood, rigging them so that[…]they soaked you in the gooey stuff.”
“How could I forget that?” Sebastian muttered.
“As a vampire, you should appreciate the gesture,” Razor joked.
Sebastian shot him a fiery glare. “As an eleven-year-old human, I didn’t.”

“I care about all my friends.”
He arched a brow. “Even me?”
“I’m not sure if I’d consider you a friend.”
“Then perhaps a handsome stranger?” he teased, poking me in the ribs. “Do you often make a habit of getting into strangers’ cars?”
“Only those I know I could take in a fight.”
